Just watching Formula 1: Drive to Survive - season two and noticed in episode 4 - Dark Days, Red Bull's Christian Horner has an iPhone 11 Pro.

Now this on its own isn't that interesting. But this episode is filmed at the German Grand Prix which was held on the 26th - 28th July 2019 meaning he would've had an 11 Pro a couple of months before official release, but probably even longer if he is using it as a daily driver.

If you go to 13:01 min into the episode you'll Christian drumming the phone on a table.

Now, I get that Netflix might have used footage taken after release and cut it into this episode but, given that they were at every race with multiple film crews this would seem like an odd step to take in the editing process.

Also note the black dots at the bottom as if to cover something.

Anyway, just thought I'd share and see what you guys make of it, as potentially, it might point to someone who gets early products from Apple, like we saw the the MacPro in someones music studio.

That's almost certainly what happened. There's basically zero chance Apple would provide an engineering sample to a nobody for a Netflix show. Heck, even Apple's own Morning Show didn't use iPhone 11.

That's an entirely different scenario. The Mac Pro had been launched but not yet shipped. You're suggesting that Apple gave an unlaunched device months ahead to Netflix production? Nah.

I wouldn’t call Christian Horner a ‘nobody’ lol. He’s one of the most famous figures in Formula One. These guys are also at the cutting edge of technology but I doubt Apple would want a prototype model in an environment where it’s likely to be heavily photographed.

Wrong, Calvin Harris showed off his studio on the 9th of November a whole day before Apple put the product on sale to the public on the 10th - who would've given him a freaking Mac Pro before it was on sale to the public....... 🤔 Sure the Mac Pro had been announced back in June but Apple clearly is giving selective customers early access to products.

Who takes all these 'shot on iPhone XX' you see in the keynotes when they announce the new iPhones - people who have had early access to the final products.

I doubt by July Apple are still working on test mules, they would be in full production by that point so they have stock in stores round the world for a release day in September

Plus as The-Red-Deal82 says, Christian Horner isn't a 'nobody', he has been an F1 boss for the last 15 years

Mac Pro made its debut on June 3, 2019. Everyone knew what the product looked like and the exact specs.

Apple didn’t give Netflix an unannounced, preproduction device.

He is a nobody in Apple’s eyes. There are countless celebrities around the world. Is this guy an electronics engineer that can help debug preproduction hardware or software? He has no value apart from carrying the device and using it like millions around the world.

Those are Apple employees with a bit of photography training. Not a race car driver with no value added to a new iPhone device launch.

Mass production starts in early August each year. We know this based on leaks from analysts, Foxconn hirings, and the obvious fact that a new version of iOS gets locked down in August to load onto new devices.

Horner works in an industry that is the pinnacle of motorsport which is highly efficient and a perfect arena for business and project management. Many of the systems used in F1 would leave even Apple in awe so I could see why they would want to be involved ‘if’ indeed that was the case. F1 is a Mecca for research and development with innovation not too dissimilar to many sectors of the consumer tech industry. I’ve been very lucky in a past job to work within it.

Again, what’s the value add here?

Tencent is an even bigger hub of tech R&D far bigger than F1. And they have deployed autonomous driving, UAVs, and delivery vehicles. Countless other companies too.

How does F1 benefit the testing of a preproduction iPhone? By testing the camera?

I take it that you can't read can you ? I already said "Sure the Mac Pro had been announced back in June but Apple clearly is giving selective customers early access to products."

If Apple isn't giving certain people early access to products then how does he have a Mac Pro set up in his studio before public release ?

If you actually read my original post I never said Apple gave Netflix a device, I was suggesting that Apple gave Christian Horner the device, again, pretty big difference, but one you missed.

Very true I was just pointing out Horner isn’t a nobody initially. Apple would be an odd fit for F1 I agree as they are far from flexible or innovative by comparison. PC companies have historically tested within this multi billion pound industry and are better suited. Lewis Hamilton has an iPhone early a few years back but likely as he’s on the celebrity circuit. F1 wouldn’t benefit from Apple I quite agree, l just thought it’s an excellent business arena for general iPhone use.

You don’t understand the difference between an unannounced and an announced product? Or the importance of that distinction?

Of course there is a massive difference between announced and unannounced products and I'm not disputing this but it also wouldn't be the first time we have seen a working Apple product out in the wild before it was announced (iPhone 4)
