Starcraft 2 4v4 replay test
My thoughts on SC2. I played SC2 on my 2010 13" and for the most part it's the same. The difference here though, is 1) I can turn up some CPU related settings like effects/physics and 2) there are less DIPS in FPS. I mostly play 4v4's and often there would be fps drops constantly if scrolling form a large battle to your base etc. I noticed that the dips occurred less or, at least weren't as noticeable, meaning the fps wouldn't drop to single digits. It ran very well within OSX and I'm happy with the results. I feel very comfortable playing on medium shaders and low/high on other settings but on 2010 I felt med/low was the standard. So for those of you wondering about SC2. IMO, it runs great for this 13" machine. Please don't comment on playing on high/ultra b/c that was already known to not be possible. Going for what works =)

If anyone has some standardized benchmarks that you want to know, let me know where to find it.

added a youtube video of my reboot times on my 2011 MBP with Vertex 2, also threw in my GF's white macbook to race against it for comparison.

very nice! if you have photoshop CS5, could you tell me how it holds up there?

I've got one for ya if it's not too much trouble.

Download the 1080p Inception Trailer 2 posted 5-10-2010 (from yahoo, right click save as) from here: http://www.hd-trailers.net/movie/inception/

Download the latest Handbrake GUI build from here: https://build.handbrake.fr/job/Mac/

Open the trailer in Handbrake, on the right in the presets under the "regular" menu select the "High Profile" preset. Select a save location if you want something different then press start, don't change any values.

Tell us the average fps from the activity window once it finishes (button on the top right, you'll have to scroll up a little probably to see it). Thanks!

Also was the geekbench on the free 32bit or was it on 64bit?

thanks alphaone, I'll do exactly that. Thanks for laying it out for me lol, makes it easy.

it was 64bit "paid" haha

*edit* alright did what you asked, it converted it into an mp4 file right

work: average encoding speed for job is 10.777041 fps

how's that look?

Interesting, that's almost exactly twice as fast as my 2008 13" 2.53C2D did it. Same goes for the Cinebench benchmarks (the only other one I have time to run right now), I get about 5.9fps on the opengl and 1.45 on the cpu. That's kind of impressive how much faster the Intel 3000HD is than the 9400m.

^ thanks for replying. I was wondering how my numbers compared to other Macbooks.

added a youtube boot video.

I was curious, so for reference, a new 17" quad-core 2.2 did the above Inception test at 17.888 fps. It kept all the cores pretty well maxed and the machine was around 78 degrees using Fan Control tuned all the way down.

^ is there a way within OSX to see your core/thread usage? Thanks for sharing your results! 4 cores 8 threads on your quad seems to really help further =D

I use iStat Menus. It keeps a little graph of each core in the top menu bar. It is a little disconcerting now having 8 cores instead of 2 up there so I'll probably make it just show the average from now on, but you can set it to show a graph of each core if you want.

It is really helpful so you can see at anytime if some rogue application is eating CPU cycles (and battery life).

So 3dmark06 scores are the same as the 320m (of the ones I could find) even with a massively better CPU. I still had some hope :(

You play any games with it yet?

lol yeah, WoW. I made a video, think it's processing on youtube. Gonna run some standard benchmarks like SFIV, RE5, Just Cause etc... to get some standards.

Will also make an SCII video after I get that installed...

I'm only really concerned with WoW and SCII though haha so I these benchmarks are just for academic purposes, but for me, I'm happy with the results in WoW thus far. really happy =)

I got 8.085 AVG FPS.
So, your Core i7 is about 20% faster than my Core i5.
Very nice, indeed :)

I've got a base model 2011 13"

If you can update your OP with links I'll run all the programs to compare

How does World of Warcraft run (FPS, Settings, etc.)?

runs well but I haven't done anything major yet. I suspect it will run just as good, if not better due to the CPU than my 2.4c2d 320m did. I'll run a few 5man Heroics over the weekend and let ya know. It should be pie. I don't do 25man raids so can't tell how that will be.

btw I updated the OP with my WoW video link w/ comments on temp, fans, etc.

Looks good. Pretty fast indeed. However, it shows again how unreliable Geekbench is!

My machine has a Geekbench score of about 14000, so should be 100% faster than the i7 MacBook Pro, right?

Well, no. The average encoding speed of the proposed video was 108 fps, which 1000%. Cinebench CPU score is 8.05, 266%.

I really can't understand why people are so fixated on Geekbench on these forums. It's a horrible benchmark that gives no indication about real world performance whatsoever!

108 fps  Amazing. 6x faster than the quad i7 2.2.

I can't watch at work, what was your average WoW FPS and settings? Just low,med,high,etc..?

Thanks!

Vertex 2 vs 5400 rpm OSX boot

actually thats not bad, my windows score on my hp is lower in all of the categories, even gaming graphics. which means i should be able to run most of my games better. diffidently getting one now.

Forgive me, but are you sure you did that test right? If you selected the normal preset instead of the high profile preset it would be a massive performance increase vs. high profile (cause it's not using all of the fancy encoding features to make it better/smaller). Or if you downloaded a smaller than 1080p trailer it would have the same effect. Even if you did that on a Mac Pro 108fps would seem very very very high for a 1080p encode to me.
