Had the same problem on my 2011 mbp, here's how I fixed it:
1) Remove InsomniaX and any other sleep program that didn't work for you.
2) Install InsomniaT: https://launchpad.net/insomniat
3) InsomniaT does not enable itself by default. Create a "insomniat_start.command" script with line "insomniat --disable" and add it to your account login items: System Preferences->Accounts->(your account)->Login Items->(add your script)
4) Reboot. Sleep on lid close is disabled by default from now on. You can still manually sleep by either going through the Apple menu or using the shortcut (command+option+eject).
The fan(s) and air intake and exhaust are located at the rear of Apple notebooks, near the hinge. The keyboard is not a vent of any kind, since there is a solid sheet under the keyboard, preventing any meaningful airflow. That's why it's fine to run in clamshell mode, as instructed by Apple.Once I get this working, would there be any concern about leaving the macbook running at night with the lid closed? I was under the impression that it uses the keyboard area as an air intake, so I am concerned about screwing up the airflow since the lid closes so nicely (never had this concern with a Windows based laptop).

They obviously have no idea what they're talking about.ATTENTION! Using your Mac with closed lid can lead to serious system heat problems!
