Just realised that OSX was released 10 years ago today. OSX is easily the best piece of software easily released, and with Lion on the horizon, perhaps this time next year OSX will be gone and OSXI here. Happy b'day OSX :)

Did you ever use the first few iterations? You wouldn't be saying this 2 months after the 10.0 release.

I had to use 10.2.8 for work, while I was using 10.5/6 on my private Macs and I got to Mac OS X during Panther.
After using 10.2.8, I gathered, that the first usable OS X version was probably Panther. Disk Utility didn't even have a mount button in 10.2.8 and I had up to 10 external HDDs connected to that 10.2.8 Mac, with 30 partitions or so. It was quite a hassle to sometimes mount volumes and I couldn't find a proper Terminal command doing so.
Anyway, Windows 5.1 will turn ten soon too. And it is still used a lot.

I started using OS X while Panther (10.3) was out, and it was pretty good. It did what I needed it to do. But overall, OS X has become more polished with each new version. Looking forward to Lion!

I jumped into the Mac game during Panther. You can argue that it had its flaws, but I'd always take it over what windows had to offer! XP was hardly usable until SP2.

10 years and used every version. Gets better every time!!!

Here's to Lion being the best release to date.

The Mac OS has come a long way.

I still kinda miss System 7, though.

Same here and I used to keep my G4 cube on OS9 so I could get my fix. I've all but assigned my G4 cube to the closet at this point however. :(

Sure, you are saying that today, but at its time 10.0 was pretty darn awesome! Although it did have its fair share of birth-defects to get ironed out.

10.1 and 10.2 were pretty awful, not to mention sluggish... ( I still loath brushed metal of 10.2 ) Pather had good performance improvements and was a definite turning point. I still miss the original Aqua look though!

The first system we had run OS X was our old Powermac G4 400 Mhz which ran Jaguar( OS 9 originally). Definitely agree with the sluggish comment. Overall, Jaguar was stable for us. No crashes or major bugs that popped up for us. But, my brothers old 300 Mhz or so Pentium PC running XP was quite a bit faster despite the Powermac being faster in the CPU department. I suspect now it was Jaguar holding the Powermac back.

Then I bought my 12" Powerbook G4 1 Ghz which ran Panther. That was a refined OS. Stable like Jaguar, but didn't bog the system down. I think Panther was the first really usable version of OS X. After that, it was just further polishing and adding more features. Although Leopard was a resource hog and slowed down my 12" Powerbook quite a bit. Though once I got my 17" MBP, Leopard had enough power to run fast.

I said it at the time, I upgraded my userername from 9.2.2 to 10.0.0 I was the first to try it from the people I knew at Uni. Where we used Macs for our coursework. I told them not to bother moving.

I thought it was crap at the time. It had severe defects. It shouldn't have been released to developers let alone to the public. Hell I could type faster that the OS could keep up. It was so bad, i didn't upgrade until Tiger, when I knew it would be the last version my G4 could handle reasonably well.

My first Mac was a 12" PowerBook G4 running Panther and man was I happy with that. I was fed up with Windows and needed a change. It's been OS X ever since, for me. :)

I still have that laptop too. It's is good condition considering all of the wear and tear over the years (missing the "D" key...still works though). A family member uses it for web browsing, email and other light duty tasks.

Agreed. OS X wasn't usable until 10.4 at least.

And you preferred Windows XP or Windows 2000 until then or something? Sure by today's standards Puma, Jaguar and Panther aren't as good as Leopard, but that's the nature of software. It tends to get better over time.

I've had absolutely no trouble using Mac OS X version 10.1 from a 333MHz iMac G3 all the way up to 10.6.6 on a 3.2GHz Mac Pro.

Apple blew it. Best time to release Lion is early March. (at least in the Midwest)
