Agreed. OS X wasn't usable until 10.4 at least.

+1. The previous versions were limited and not compatible with anything. I went straight from OS9 to Tiger. Sure, Mac OSX looked far better than OS9, but OS9 was compatible with everything back then. But when Tiger came out OS9 started to die, and Tiger was useful, so I got a white intel iMac with Tiger on it :D Great computer, lasted for 5 years!

The Mac OS has come a long way.

I still kinda miss System 7, though.

Wow that brings back some memories... Haven't used System7 since I was 6-8 years, old, on an LC3 and a Macintosh Preforma.

I've had absolutely no trouble using Mac OS X version 10.1...

Me neither... though I started using OS X from the night it was released (actually it was 6 months prior to that with Public Beta, even now I lament the fact that Apple weren't brave enough to go with the truly radical GUI in that version).

I was one of the few that attended the midnight launch of OS X in Micro Anvika on London's Tottenham Court Road, (we even made it into the Guardian's G2 supplement, this long before queuing for Apple products was seen as a cool thing to do :p :p :p ).

I ran OS X and OS 9 concurrently for 12 months until 2002 when by that time much of the software I used had migrated, and that's when I binned the OS 9 partition.

OS X 10.0 had its quirks (but then so did Snow Leopard on launch), lack of DVD Player and Font Management for example, but its protected memory and multi-tasking immediately made it a more stable and productive workhorse with native apps, fortunately Macromedia were on the ball with Freehand, it's a shame Adobe didn't have the same foresight with their own products otherwise I would've migrated much sooner than I did.

I actually still keep disk images for the Public Beta and OS X 10.0 for personal posterity's sake. :)

Can't really believe it's been 10 years actually, my life was very different then. :(

How come this isn't a news item? I would think even MacRumors wouldn't forget the 10th birthday of Mac OS X. Other tech sites (original site: tweakers.net) which aren't Mac-related don't seem to forget.

I said it at the time, I upgraded my userername from 9.2.2 to 10.0.0 I was the first to try it from the people I knew at Uni. Where we used Macs for our coursework. I told them not to bother moving.

I thought it was crap at the time. It had severe defects. It shouldn't have been released to developers let alone to the public. Hell I could type faster that the OS could keep up. It was so bad, i didn't upgrade until Tiger, when I knew it would be the last version my G4 could handle reasonably well.

Well, each to his own I guess. I loved the new interface, though I think I only upgraded at 10.0.4, which I found very usable on my old sawtooth (which actually still runs occasionally, though with Tiger now. They sure made them well back then!).

ps. nice username! I really wanted one of those back then :)

And you preferred Windows XP or Windows 2000 until then or something? Sure by today's standards Puma, Jaguar and Panther aren't as good as Leopard, but that's the nature of software. It tends to get better over time.

I've had absolutely no trouble using Mac OS X version 10.1 from a 333MHz iMac G3 all the way up to 10.6.6 on a 3.2GHz Mac Pro.

I do not wish to start an argument as this should be a thread of celebration but yes, OS X 10.2 and .3 which they had at school at the time put me off Macs and I did feel that Windows 98 which I had at the time was rather superior even though it lacked the eye candy.

I was lucky enough to have savings. Just before the dotcom bubble burst, I spent £3,000 on a Dual 500, 17" CRT Apple Display to use for uni and afterwards. It still works perfectly fine. I've had less trouble from that machine in 10 years than the MacPro in the past 3.

The GUI was great, it just wasn't a practical OS to use. Non of the software was able to run smoothly. Apple should have spent another year to get it ready.

I remember the first time I used OS X was on my friend's power mac G3 or G4, can't really remember. It ran 10.2.

No idea I shared a birthday with OS X!

Happy birthday then! wow! I envy those who have a birthday on July 17, the default date on the iCal icon.

I started using 10.6.4 when i first got a mac. 10 years ago I was just 4 years old. Wow. That was before I even knew what a computer was.
