CutYourSim, a company that makes SIM cutters, is out with a service they claim permanently unlocks your GSM iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G – without the need for jailbreaking. It’s an “official iPhone unlock”, they explain, and will carry on forever. This lets you unlock your device for use with any carrier and update it to the latest iOS firmware and baseband without waiting for an unauthorized unlock to be released:

The unlock will work with any iPhone version, and any baseband version, no need to worry about updating to the latest version anymore.

The iPhone Dev-team seem to be endorsing this solution. It doesn’t come cheap and will set you back $169 per device. Best of all, the company says, the procedure won’t void your warranty. How’s that possible? MacStories.net offers one possible explanation. Read on…

The site speculates that CutYourSim must have found a way to access Apple’s database that holds unique IMEI numbers. It’s highly unlikely they hacked Apple’s own database, but they could have accessed it from a carrier’s online backend, the author explains.

From there, it’s a simple matter of whitelisting your device’s IMEI, which removes the lock on your device. If that’s the case, something tells me Apple will soon ask its carriers to tighten their online security in order to prevent unauthorized IMEI whitelisting. They might also send their legal sharks after CutYourSim.

Call me crazy! I just bought it. I'll know in 3-5 days if it works.

This remote unlock works for iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4

1) Type in your iPhone's IMEI number in the IMEI# section. You can get this number from the phone by dialing *#06# (This is very important) please do not get the IMEI number from the box, or about screen.

NOTE: Please check, and double check your entered IMEI#, I can't give refunds for orders with incorrect IMEI Numbers

Even though this will officially unlock your iPhone, Facetime may not be supported by unofficial carriers, unless you purchase MiTime activation from http://mitime.info/

2) Once payment is received, we will email you when the phone is ready, and unlocked. (This can take 2-5 days, or less) You will not need to enter any codes, your IMEI# will be added to Apple's whitelist and will be unlocked forever.
3) Once unlock is complete, we will notify you. All you have to do then is, connect your iPhone with any Sim Card to iTunes. This will then activate and unlock your phone

Weird.

Anyhow, here in the Netherlands Iphone's are already sold unlocked by Apple. My bet is that it won't take that much longer before the rest of the world can enjoy the carrier of her/his choice.

I travel a lot internationally and the last time I left the states I had accidentally updated my baseband to 02.10.04 losing my software unlock. It was awful being in another country with only my hotel phone. If I was meeting friends I had to wait in my room for them to call. Not having a cell phone sucked!!! I def need the unlock.

I find this interesting but I also bet Apple with find a way to relock these devices that end up working via this service (If it in fact works)

would this not result in people paying + $500-600 (or more) for phones?

I bet this causes prices to fall if this proves to be true. My CL is littered with 01.59 Baseband iPhone 4's for 800-1000. These guys will be SOL if this works.

This looks interesting, bgr report that it does indeed works but the important thing is how long will it works for, will it be permanent or will apple block out your imei?

Just normal unsubsidized prices i guess? http://store.apple.com/nl/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTAyNTQzMjI

You can google translate if you want, but it will say that it really is sold unlocked.

Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple and ready for use.

If you buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you get this unlocked. So you can sign up for a subscription to the network provider of your choice at any time and switch to another provider. Questions? IPhone Call our experts on 0800 0200 570.

Of course there's always the option for subsidized iphones. I think the pressrelease some time ago of apple stated something like: As it is already on so many providers, we might as well sell it unlocked.

The big question is will a restore to same/newer firmware relock the phone? I've heard this mentioned.

Not interested in a discussion on the seczone here, more interested on discussion of your IMEI being interrogated by itunes to match it against the whitelist.

where do you see that mentioned ?

so glad they are sold unlocked over here in the UK, $170 for an unlock? you must be having a laugh!

Well if u dont know how factory unlock iphone works, everytime u update or restore, it connect to itunes, and itunes connect to apple database and check ur imei, and if the imei is in the list of unlock phone, then it activate and unlock it, that's the gist of it anyway, dont wanna get too technical. The problem with this unlock method is that we dont know if it's legal for the unlocker to add our phone imei to that database of unlock phone, i doubt it is legal and apple can always go and remove it themselves. However, as I understand, itunes also use a auth token as it connect to itunes, if we can some how save it just like we saved our blob, it might just works.

Why can't people be honest and say they screwed up and updated their phone? You can't accidentally update as long as you have your blobs.

AT&T would probably have to send Apple a list of phones that aren't supposed to be unlocked. The question is, are they willing to do it? Otherwise, the phone will stay unlocked--just like any other factory or carrier-unlocked phone.

What does an unlocked iphone cost in the UK? $800? Thanks, but I'll gladly take a 2 year contract and $199 for the phone and $170 for the unlock.

$170 is just too expensive IMO. Also I would be afraid that Apple would crack down on these unlocked iPhones and you will be out $170...which is quite a bit of money.

Just paid Negri $164.50 :D
Although my soul has been sold to ATT, it would be nice to have an unlocked iphone 4, so i can mentally rub it in ATT's face!!
hehe, lets see what happens in a day or two.

I thought they closed sales for the day since they had so many to process. ?

I thought so too. Used the Add to wish list and then add to check out cart option and it went thought.

I paid through Google check out...

ATT shouldn't have to do anything. Since they don't offer any unlock on iphones, all their them should be locked. And, Apples knows which phones are ATT so they should easily be able to re-lock / backlist them.
