Booq Mamba.XS reviewlet

I just got my Mamba.XS bag and thought I would share some impressions in case anyone is interested!

Overall this is probably the best laptop+a couple of other things bags I have seen. It is well made, stylish, and very versatile. The main compartment, which has a storage area for a couple of books and a newspaper or magazine, has a separate zippered compartment for the PB. The laptop compartment is nicely padded and should keep your precious safe! There is also an outer zippered 'patch pocket' which holds the powersupply and cord as well as assorted sundries (iPod and powersupply, cell phone, DVD media!). For a fairly compact bag it's storage options are really very useful. Another versatile feature are the two carrying straps provided allow the Mamba.XS to be used as a shoulder bag, shoulder+waist bag, or as a backpack. There is also a grab handle on top so that the straps can be removed and it can be carried as a sleeve-type bag.

Another attractive feature is that the Mamba.XS can be attached to one of Booq's larger bags by a built-in zipper to form an even larger bag. I have not tried this but it might be an attractive option for the rare occasions when I have to carry my 12" PB with more other stuff or with my porky PC notebook.

I bought the bag sight unseen after visiting the web site and I am very pleased with it.

12" bags: Mamba & Acme

I'll second that praise for the Mamba XS, which has to be one of the best bags for strolling around town. It's probably too small for school use (might be why it can attatch to the XL)--that compartment for books really doesn't fit more than one hardback or a couple of paperbacks. But that's the beauty of the XS. Minimalist. It makes you take only what you really need, thus keeping things light for travel. Which, after all, is why most of us love the 12". Light and portable.

Which brings me to a quick review of the ACME bag which I got only recently.

Unlike the Mamba, this bag is suppose to remain slim and flat. It has one main, well padded compartment for the laptop and one side "utility" compartment. This side compartment has very little wiggle room. I can barely slide in my powersupply let alone a lot of extras.....But then, the real purpose of this bag is absolute minimalist--it's job is to make sure you travel ultra-light and can get the laptop in and out with no fuss at all.

So you're sitting at a conference table, "Here's what I wanted to show you--" and out comes the laptop at a meeting. Or you're on an airplane heading for a one-day meeting--up comes the bag from under the seat, you slip the computer out onto the tray table, use it, then very quickly get it back in the bag and over your shoulder as you're about to de-plane.

This is the sort of bag secret agents carry their laptops in. Hold it by the handle and you feel like you're on a mission. You can't travel much lighter than this unless you forgo a bag altogether. And it looks so darn good.

I have both too - I feel like the Imelda Marcos of laptop cases! I agree the Acme is more professional-looking and more protective while the Mamba is more versatile and street-stylish. My 12" will probably live in the Acme but travel in the Mamba.
