Colour calibration is a professional only feature, to enjoy that please check out Apple's professional line of Powerbooks.

Okay, you are either saying that before shipping, Apple calibrates the PowerBooks, while not the iBooks or you mean that an iBook cannot be calibrated by the user.

First, the screens are just set at some default without any human tinkering. Second, Tiger allows any user to calibrate heir display, including fine tweaking.

I'm not sure what you mean by “professional feature.”

No, colour calibration is available on all Macs using OS X (well, I have never used 10.1, but ....). It's available from System Preferences -> Displays -> Color. All Macs are also capable of retaining multiple calibration profiles for multiple screens. So when I plug a 2005FPW into my iBook, I get a separate list of calibrations appropriate to it, including only the calibrations I made for it, and it remembers which one I chose to use.

And yes, I agree with what tjwett said, in answer to the "why" question. Even if you are not trying to get onscreen photos to match print, calibration has a big impact on the perceived brightness, the richness of colors, and the perceived contrast of the screen. Especially if you compare your notebook to someone else's, it's a big confounding element, when you say, "My notebook looks better," or, "Her notebook looks better." I'm not saying there are no better or worse screens. Just that you need to do a real A-B comparison....

maybe the brightness level on the PB needed to be turned up...? They've all looked the same to me in the Apple store. But then they ARE on the opposite sides of the store.

I don't see why people keep saying that the PB display is SO much better. Truthfully looking at a Rev. C 12' PB vs. a new 12' iBook I see NO difference.

This is a crude comparision but my new 1.33 14" iBook screen is almost twice as bright as the 667 DVI Ti Powerbook screen, with identical apps running. Of course was the same on my 400mhz Ti -- iBook screen is great. Just GREAT.
