No, colour calibration is available on all Macs using OS X (well, I have never used 10.1, but ....). It's available from System Preferences -> Displays -> Color. All Macs are also capable of retaining multiple calibration profiles for multiple screens. So when I plug a 2005FPW into my iBook, I get a separate list of calibrations appropriate to it, including only the calibrations I made for it, and it remembers which one I chose to use.
And yes, I agree with what
tjwett said, in answer to the "why" question. Even if you are not trying to get onscreen photos to match print, calibration has a big impact on the perceived brightness, the richness of colors, and the perceived contrast of the screen. Especially if you compare your notebook to someone else's, it's a big confounding element, when you say, "My notebook looks better," or, "Her notebook looks better." I'm not saying there are no better or worse screens. Just that you need to do a real A-B comparison....
