Finally got to try out my new 12 Pro Max on a portrait photoshoot yesterday. I took 11 photos in portrait mode and took two HDR 4k 60fps video clips, one was 19 seconds, the other was 15 seconds. Phone warmed up and the screen went so dark I could hardly see it outdoors. Brightness slider did nothing, even maxed out. Let the phone sit for about 5 minutes, picked it up again, same thing. Shut it down, waited a few minutes and powered it back up and it was back to normal. The rest of the time, I shot portrait mode photos and 1080p 30fps video and it was just fine.

This is very concerning that the phone is going into some kind of safe mode after only 11 photos and just over 30 seconds of 4k video. Thats ridiculous to be honest. It never actually shut down on me, but probably would have had I kept shooting in HDR 4K. In the phone's defense, it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit and I was shooting towards the sun, but still. Not happy at all because that means this phone will be useless for any kind of outdoor shooting in 4K HDR for more than a few minutes. Not good.

No one else has run into this yet? Anyone else shooting 4K 60fps in HDR?

I've shot several 4K 60 HDR videos (1-3 min) with the auto fps off and camera lock off. No issues. Slightly warm, as expected.

I’ve been filming a series of teaching videos the last couple of days, typically in 5-10 minute chunks. It certainly does get a little warm to the touch in a particular spot, but no more than that, and certainly issues with shutting down, etc. This is in a warm-ish flat (say 20-21°).

I’m interested to keep an eye on this, to see what sort of conditions it becomes a problem. If it makes you feel any better, Canon got some bad publicity with their flagship R5 camera ($3.5k) which had overheating issues when recording 4K at 60FPS!

Ok, in the apple silicone case, into the sun, with action, no problems. Directly came inside and airplayed to apple tv 4k, no problems.

Def. not normal.. I shot a 3 minute clip @4k 60fps on my Max and also the regular Pro, and besides feeling a bit warm... no other issues.

Yea, I shot some videos at the park the other day, 4k 60fps HDR and that didnt happen. But I was in the shade and it was a cooler day. If it was doing that because it was 90 degrees and I was in the sun, still not acceptable IMO. Im going to go outside and test again now that its a cooler day and no direct sun on the iPhone and see.

I shot a solid hour of 4K/60/HDR video on day two of owning a 12 Pro Max, and aside from the large hits to the battery (about 25%) and storage (about 30 GB), there were no observable adverse effects.

Worked fine this evening, but its also 22 degrees cooler (68) and the sun was setting as opposed to 90 degrees and shooing in the afternoon sun. Just know that this may be an issue in hot weather...

On another topic, when you compare portrait photos and HDR videos, which do you like better?
Do you feel HDR videos actually render skin tone better than photos?

Sun directly hitting your phone + 90 degrees + 4k60 HDR = yes it will overheat. You’re asking too much. Your 12 PM can record for a long time but that requires avoiding direct sunlight hitting phone.

I did a bunch of 4k 60 fps movies of a giant 200 foot crane that parked in front of my home for 5 hours recently to take apart an absolutely gigantic tree in sections so took a lot of film of that.

Not only that I did a time lapse out my front window that must have been around 4-5 hours without a break without issues.

I recorded a bunch of videos at Christmas at a good amount of time and had no issues with heat at all

Still blown away by the quality

I actually just had this happen again shooting 1080 at 60fps in 84 degree weather. Within two minutes. Unacceptable. Very poorly designed.

Have run quite a few demanding games on the 12 PM and it only gets moderately hot.
Haven’t tried 4k hdr yet

Just recorded for 17 min 4k60 HDR...no issue at all. I could have gone longer... phone just a little warm. NO STUTTERING.

conditions: indoors. Room temp.
