I scheduled a call with a Verizon rep and she talked me through the activation process and my new phone is working fine so far. I did have to upgrade my plan to a 5GB plan, she said that would give me Nationwide 5G. Upgrading to Unlimited would have been an additional $90/mo for our two line plan. Maybe Verizon has things sorted out now ?
What plan did you have before you switched to the 5G plan? do you have the 5G icon in the upper right hand corner of your phone? I have a normal 5 GB download plan (which Verizon has stated includes nationwide 5G ) and with my 5G Sim card and my iPhone 12 pro I have never received an icon in the upper right hand corner of my screen as of yet. 5G map shows I’m in the nationwide 5G area. Thank you for your reply if any

My situation is much worse. I probably win the prize for the biggest mess.

I purchased the phone (2) from Apple as I usually do. The phone won’t activate. Several levels of tech support at VZ were also blocked from activating the new phone.

I had problems when preordering, which left multiple pending orders in Apple’s database. Because VZ sees pending orders, they cannot activate my new phone. They spoke to Apple and neither VZ or Apple can resolve the issue.

It will require intervention from Apple corporate and heavy lifting from Apple engineering to correct this. I was advised to return the two phones to the Apple store and purchase directly from VZ if I want to have phones any time soon.

Yes it works by simply moving your old Verizon SIM to the new iPhone. Every year I buy the SIM free version direct from Apple and I have moved the same VZ SIM card from the iPhone X to iPhone 11 and now to the iPhone 12. Not sure if original poster is talking about new activation or activation from another wireless provider.
Just be careful with that as SIMs can and do go bad. It can cause all sorts of wonkiness with the phone it’s in.

FWIW, My old phone was a flip phone which had an incompatible SIM card that would not work in my new iPhone 12 Pro. I had to call AT&T to change phones & keep the same number. The AT&T young lady required the iPhone SIM # which was 20 digits I believe along with the IMEI & AT&T Account numbers. Piece of cake after that & the swap was made which took maybe 15minutes.

Yes I do have the 5G icon, but it only appears when either wifi is turned off or when out of wifi range. It took me a few minutes to figure this out :)

Reactions: Never mind
Now I'm second guessing my "buy unlocked and swap SIMs". I'm sure I'll want 5G even though I don't think we have mmWave in Arizona yet. Guess I'll just suck it up and pay the activation fee and order the Verizon phone. Blech.

My only thing with buying again is that it will need to be from VZ directly. If I go through Apple again. I will have the same activation issues.

Thank you for the update. I was on a 5 GB plan and no 5G icon on my phone, then I upgraded to the unlimited plan for 80 bucks per month and I still get no icon indicating it’s 5G, with WiFi off nor when out of range of Wi-Fi. I’ll give it a few more days, and I’m gonna go back to my normal 5 GB plan for 70 bucks. F&#&$ Verizon

I bought unlocked and Apple just gave me two 5G sims for free.

I can confirm, as others have said, that my Verizon SIM card from my iPhone X worked just fine on my 12 Pro except for the 5G part. Verizon sent me out a new 5G card and I was able to activate that last night online although the process was not seamless.

I don't know what it is with Verizon's software this year but I had a similar experience. I placed and canceled a couple of orders in my usual launch indecisiveness and one of the 12 orders is "stuck" as a pending order on my line. I wasn't able to place an order because of that so after a few days of being told by different tiers of customer support that it would clear within X hours, I gave up and just showed up at a Verizon store on launch morning. Luckily they had stock but they still weren't able to use the available upgrade on my line because of that stuck pending order (which is showing as canceled on low-tier support software).

I called yesterday because I used my wife's upgrade to get my 12 Pro and I plan on using mine to replace the 7 we have as a backup phone with a 12 mini and it was still showing as stuck. The lady I spoke with (bless her heart; she was a total sweetheart) said she'd seen this before and she could clear it up no problem. Finishing up the call she said it would be gone by the end of the day. Log into Apple this morning and go through the order process with a 12 and sure enough, line is ineligible for an upgrade due to pending order.
