Macs run about 50% speed w/o the battery.

There is not enough juice in the charger to run the CPU at full speed so the battery is needed for full power.

I seemed to recall the dead battery may affect performance when you asked about it. No wonder it runs so slow even compared to my 12" iBook G4 1.33 which has a working battery. I'll have to benchmark the iBook and see the difference.

Edit: Yup, the iBook G4 did better. The score is right where it should be.

I just fired up my "hotrod" 1.5ghz 12"(it has an SSD). Much to my surprise, I apparently hadn't used it since February. It has a good, less than one year old NewerTech battery with about 40 cycles in it(Newertech is the gold standard in aftermarket batteries, although they no longer make them for the 12" PB). Unsurprisingly, the battery was dead and it had gone into "deep sleep."

I plugged it in, started it back up, and ran Geekbench. My initial numbers were horrible(in the 200 range) but the battery was also still more or less dead. They improved as the batter charged, and I also did a reboot to clear out some applications that were left running and known to have serious memory leaks(i.e. Canon EOS Utilites). The last run I did was 694, although the battery was only up to 3% and I think it can do better. I'm going to let it charge for a few hours and try again.

LOVE the comparison... it is my first computer with my most recent purchase (512 Space Gray - which I have yet to get my hands on!)... and I LOVED the 12PB.

This is going to be awesome...

I can't for the life of me get a reasonable benchmark from my 1.5ghz Powerbook. I don't know why, as it's really a pleasantly useable computer. I'm typing this from it now, and aside from the small screen size I don't feel hindered at all. It's fast and responsive on the web(as long as I stay away from Youtube) and just generally very pleasant-especially with the keyboard!
