stuttering in snow leopard was not a serious issue
Yesterday I installed a 240 GB Vertex 3 from Newegg in place of the BTO 128GB Apple SSD.
Almost immediately I patched with the TRIM support enabler and everything was looking good, UNTIL I let the system go to sleep. It would come back after a wake, but any program open would go unresponsive with beachballs. One time I was able to avoid a hard restart, but 2 other times, the whole system locked up (except the mouse). Might be my imagination, but it seemed like my boot time was a little slower too.
I just restored the original TRIM settings with the app, and now I can go to sleep and wake normally. Anyone had this happen?
I had this happen as well. Except I'd say when the system did not beachball, IO was just as fast as ever.
I think maybe you never waited long enough for the beachballs to stop. I never had to hard reboot my mac due to this issue.
When I thought about the issue, I suspected it was because the system was installed without TRIM enabled. Therefore deletes occurred which were never TRIMed on the ssd. When Snow Leopard would encounter these unclean blocks, which should have been clean, I guesstimated the system was stuttering in result. Afterall TRIM was brand new for OS X, and wasn't even supposed to be enabled for this SSD. Makes sense it would have some edge-case issues with unsupported drives.
The first couple of days this 10 second stutter occurred about every 30 minutes. Day 3 it was down to once an hour. Day 7 about twice a day. The second week about once every 2-3 days. It eventually stopped happening altogether.
Whether I'm right or wrong about *why* it was happening, the end result is still the same. The stuttering stopped altogether, I think OS X (10.6) was just getting adapting the SSD to be what it expected it to be.

Post #2 (different topic, so figured best to make it a separate post)
(read my post right above this one for context)
When I upgraded to Lion, TRIM was disabled again.
I enabled the hack to enable TRIM... and the stuttered came back.
This was to be expected. I expected them to slowly go away as well.
I'm still waiting. I installed Lion about a week ago. The last couple of days it seemed they were getting less frequent, but today I have a few happen minutes from each other.. which caused me to start googling to see if Lion had some incompatibility with Vertex 3, whether with or without TRIM.
I saw some post suggesting TRIM should not be enabled on Vertex 3 SSDs... which I thought maybe was a new development. In hindsight, no one ever provides any information to backup this claim. I don't agree with the statement. These are people who clearly are not performance interested and/or lazy, therefore look for a reason not to concern themselves with TRIM. No one buys a Vertex 3 to *virtually* have the same performance 4 months later. Performance GEEKS by Vertex 3, to have the best performance they possibly can. Therefore, a Vertex 3 geek enables TRIM. Until I see proof this is incompatible with OS X in some way, I'll stick to that notion.
I'm not convinced the stutters won't go away again... so I'm still in a waiting pattern... was starting to get worried is all.
