I think that there are at least 400 new features in Tiger. Just think -- Apple mentioned 216 of its big features (here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/over200.html) but didn't mention others that I have heard around the web.
Here is a list of some that I have found that Apple didn't list:
- Smart Times
- Smart Dates
- Extended Path Integration
- New Menu Bar Interface
- Huge Speed Enhancements Everywhere
- History Search Enhancements in Safari
- New Sound Themes
- DVD Player Application Displays DVD Artwork While Video isn't Playing if Artwork is Available
- DVD Player Application has a Built-in Sleep Timer (shuts down system or puts computer to sleep after a designated time)
- Intro Movie (as leaked recently)
- Multiple Processor Support
- Safari PostScript Support
- Microphone Calibrating
- Fast User Switching Menu Can Now Be an Icon Instead of Text
- Email Certificate Viewer in Mail
- Enhanced iCal Preferences
- Resolution Independent UI with 256 X 256 Pixel Icons (discontinued or partially supported?)
- Unmentioned New Developer Applications
- Fast Logout and Autosave (discontinued or partially supported?)
- New Web Kit (discontinued of part?)
- Installer Application Supports Plug-ins
- Installer Application Supports Distribution Scripts
- Installer Application Doesn't Install Files that are Already Up-to-Date
- Installer Application Lets the User Select Application to Update
- Multiple Disk Installs for Developers
- Panel Reduction Installs
- Totally Automated Installs
- PDF Kit
- Open GL Enhancements
- Core Data Framework Enhancements
- Bonjour Subnet Support (before Tiger only local subnets could be browsed)
- Domain Names are Auto Detected with Bonjour
- CFNetwork Performance Enhancements
- CFNetwork Improved Interoperability with NT LAN Manager
- Support for CFHTTPAuthentication
- Help Viewer with Apple Web Support Integration
- QuickTime B-Frame
- New QuickTime Framework
- And Much Much More!...
(I'll might mention more later in the thread if I find or remember more.)
Just think Apple calls 100 core image effects 1 new feature not 100. Apple is mentioning all of its big updates but ignoring all of the great little small enhancements. All enhancements big and small make a BIG difference. I know Apple mentioned some of these on other pages of their websites but they didn't call any of them features. I guess it depends on what somebody defined as a feature or as an important feature regardless of size. Apple should have mentioned that Tiger has at least 250 features and mentioned them all instead of keeping us ignorant. Maybe Apple wants us to be surprised when we first install Tiger and find features for ourselves. Otherwise it is pointless when Apple isn't mentioning what OS X Tiger has to offer.
(I got a lot of this information from this web site's Archives: http://www.appleinsider.com but I got other parts from other places over the web that have information about Tiger.)
Anybody have another estimate besides 400 new features? Less? More?
What did you notice Apple failed to mention about Tiger?
