400+ Features in Tiger - What Apple Failed Mention...

I think that there are at least 400 new features in Tiger. Just think -- Apple mentioned 216 of its big features (here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/over200.html) but didn't mention others that I have heard around the web.

Just think Apple calls 100 core image effects 1 new feature not 100. Apple is mentioning all of its big updates but ignoring all of the great little small enhancements. All enhancements big and small make a BIG difference. I know Apple mentioned some of these on other pages of their websites but they didn't call any of them features. I guess it depends on what somebody defined as a feature or as an important feature regardless of size. Apple should have mentioned that Tiger has at least 250 features and mentioned them all instead of keeping us ignorant. Maybe Apple wants us to be surprised when we first install Tiger and find features for ourselves. Otherwise it is pointless when Apple isn't mentioning what OS X Tiger has to offer.

(I got a lot of this information from this web site's Archives: http://www.appleinsider.com but I got other parts from other places over the web that have information about Tiger.)

Anybody have another estimate besides 400 new features? Less? More?

I found tons not listed on Apple's page, and most related to Quicktime alone. There are also numerous bug fixes and changes in UI finder that most will find improves usability.

Such as in Disk Utility, repairing permissions no longer brings up the message about the CD/ISO 9660 message fix. I believe it still fixes that in the background, but it makes no mention of it, so the user is lead to believe everything is fine, when in reality, it is!

Apple doesn't include this in Tiger's 200 new features, but Finder is much, much faster now. Resizing finder windows is smooth, even on my laptop. Coreimage is buried somewhere in Tiger, I haven't been able to visually exploit it yet. Hopefully with FCP 5, we can really see Tiger roar.

Resizing finder windows is smooth, even on my laptop.

Does your laptop have a core image supported video card or are you using an iBook or an older PowerBook that doesn't have core image supported video cards? I want to know if I will get this awesomeness with my iBook!

Coreimage is buried somewhere in Tiger, I haven't been able to visually exploit it yet. Hopefully with FCP 5, we can really see Tiger roar.

You'll probably be able to experience it just fine. I don't think that live resizing requires Core Image. Surely it's not that huge on the processor?

yeah i will be waiting unil June to get it probably, not a horribly long time, but im not rushing out to get it at this point, but dont get me wrong, i wish i could pre-order it right now....(must remember that patience is a virtue)

If you use 10.4.0 you don't have to use the new buggy features. Instead do what you normally do on 10.3.9. I know this isn't possible for everything but I'd recommend to try to do this as best as one can.

Things will be more enhanced in 10.4.0 then in 10.3.9. so you will get more work done, if you face any bugs you will save more time overall from the overall enhancements.

If you have a backup why not use it as your main system? You have nothing to loose.

Good point. I guess it just depends on your circumstances.

I too am booting off of a hard drive but I have two partitions; one for running my system and one the other one for back up my system. If I had one partition and no backup I'd probably wait too.

I usually back my data up daily with the application called "SuperDuper!" (yeah isn't it weird that the application has an exclamation point in its name?). SuperDuper! works great for backing up data. It is better than Carbon Copy Cloner from my experience.

What is this guide all about? What does it have to do with Tiger's release?

By the way if Fink or anything else does get broken you can always keep a bootable copy of Panther around on a partition of your computer's hard drive or your firewire hard drive (if you have one).

My observations:
Dashboard is so much cooler than i thought that it would be. Maybe not useful but cool. If you use expose then you'll use Dashboard. It's kinda a mix between expose and Sherlock, plus many other apps.

Spotlight is instantaneous (sp?) "find" heaven. My only doubt is lack of privacy. It scans all text files, email, pdf, psd qt, avi, divx, jpg, etc.......metadata.....


I have found that it sometime finds files that don't contain the relavent word.
example, searched "canon" on my cpu.

399 results found

Really metadata.. it finds every jpg or psd file that was taken with a canon digital camera, even if snagged from a website.

3 of my emails were found that don't contain "canon" or "canonxxxxxxxx"
why are the 3 emails highlighted? still trying to figure it out.

what is "canonxxxxx" you ask?
spotlight found a pdf with the word "canonical" in a bash (unix) reference guide.

You have to understand how fast Spotlight is... if I walk away from my desk for 2 minutes, someone can come to my desk, type "monster" and within 10 seconds find my resume, and all emails with contacts and potential future employers that have contacted me in regards to monster.com

Imho you will be waiting forever for this one.
I understand your need and might even find this usefull myself (it would make me buy a shuffle faster ), yet technically i don't see this happening.

Really really obscure one:

doing sysctl -A in Terminal turns up a listing of the number of "logical" and "physical" processors. The only place I've seen this terminology used is when referring to SMT (aka HyperThreading), which indicates that the scheduler may be SMT aware now (a non-SMT-aware scheduler may schedule two threads using the same resources to the same processor, which kinda wastes the potential of SMT. A smarter scheduler will avoid this when possible).

I have a question about Spotlight. Does it search other user's folders also? I want to keep my private stuff private by creating a separate user account. It would seem like a bug if Spotlight can show documents located in other user accounts. Hopefully even if you have the Admin access, it won't let you search other user folders.

Have a separate account for porn, separate for job searching, another for old girlfriends, etc. Email will be tough unless I create separate email accounts and separate them. I guess I won't let people use my computer and remember to log out when I leave.

Your worst nightmare would be auto-fill, where spotlight proposes a search term (like browser do with hand typed urls).
