It's 4G.After some looking on AT&T web site I figured out that it's not 4g speeds but is faster / double that of my current iPhone4.
Sounds good to me, I have unlimited data but Im sure I don't use that much anyway. It will be nice to have web pages load twice as fast!

I'm pretty dim at this sort of thing. I was under the impression that this wouldn't work on Verizon? So the 4s on the Verizon performs just as the 4? Or will it too be at speeds of 14.4?
Not another one...Correct me if I'm wrong, but the iPhone 4S's 14.4 mbps speed is not the same as HSPA+'s speed of 21 mbps, which tells me the iPhone 4S's speed is not 4G speeds.

AT&T's backhaul starts at 0, and tops out at 21Mbps.
Backhaul has nothing to do with the type radio used in a phone or tower.
It's simply a data pipe.

You're reading too much into it.So while it's true HSDPA tops out at 14.0Mbps, and the iPhone 4S reaches 14.4Mbps, it does so using HSDPA + MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out--two seperate 3G 7.2Mbps connections). AT&T networks are now running up to 21Mbps, which they've dubbed "4G", using HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. These are different technologies (well, different protocol anyway) which tells me the two are not the same, iPhone 4S being a third slower, and therefore not 4G.
I thought during the keynote that it was mentioned 14Mbps download speeds and it was stated that Apples competition calls this 4G?

Tech specs page says it all.14.4Mb/s (or pretty much thereabouts) is the lowest end of 4G speeds but I reckon Apple threw that in just for a bit of marketing spin. Personally I think its pretty cheeky to call it 4G but there you go.
To those saying that the iP4S is a HSPA+ device, I really don't know where you got this information from because it certainly isn't from Apple's iP4S tech spec page so please enlighten me. Just because it can reach a certain speed (say 14.4Mb/s) does not automatically classify it as HSPA+.

No 14.4 Mbps is only on AT&T/GSM networks. Verizon and Sprint will use EVDO. Much slower.
For those that want to know in the real world in a good AT&T area (if you can find one) 14.4 HSPA+ will get 8 - 10 Mbps.
AT&T calls it 4G.
