I just got today a Mac Pro 2009 (4.1) Single CPU Quad Core 2.66Ghz and I would like to know which is the best/newest/fastest processor that I can drop in as an upgrade?
I'm looking for hours on the net but I can't get an exact answer for this exact model(early 2009).
I've seen something about the W3690 but I'm not sure at all, so please help:confused:
Thank you in advance!

Thanks Philip, so the W3690 is a NO, right?
What about the EFI update, I haven't seen anything about this anywhere, just straight CPU replacements!!!

you can do the w3690 it costs 1000 for a new one. it is the fastest. There is a link on how to change your 2009's efi.

to the forum users please post the link on this thread .

You can drop in a W3580 3.33GHz 4-core no issues. These are very hard to find and will cost you over $1,000.

Or you can upgrade the firmware to a 2010 that I'm sure is not authorized by Apple: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,852.0.html

Now you can drop in a W3680 3.33 6-core and make it fly like a new machine. These CPU's can be purchased anyplace for $600.

Any Nehalem is drop in (Fastest 3.33GHz Quad). Any Westmere will need EFI update (Fastest 3.46GHz 6-core). The sweet price point is the W3670 3.2GHz 6-core @600.00 and W3680 @650.00. $350.00 more for 133MHz is a rip off but the bragging rights would be yours:)
