That's because it is. It is the 5th iPhone to be made. Apple just didn't market it as such. And the 6th iPhone to be made, may or may not be marketed as the "iPhone 5".

see they guys nows... he hasnt opened it but he knows its amazing and the cam is amazing too

iPhone 6 ?
1st iPhone's name: iPhone
2nd iPhone's name: iPhone 3G
3rd iPhone's name: iPhone 3GS
4th iPhone's name: iPhone 4
5th iPhone's name: iPhone 4S

How many do you think walk in asking for a Itouch. I am also into saltwater fish I see allot of people asking for a Nemo and Dori fish..
I see so many people get riled up when the iPod Touch is called the iTouch, but if you know what they're talking about then its not a big deal. Same goes with the iPhone 5 since the OP knew exactly what he meant. And to be honest then you cant blame a casual end user for what they call it because if Apple wasn't so secretive then the industry wouldn't have to fictionalize a name.

iPhone 4S = iPhone 4S. It's not the iPhone 5.

iPhone 6 ?
1st iPhone's name: iPhone
2nd iPhone's name: iPhone 3G
3rd iPhone's name: iPhone 3GS
4th iPhone's name: iPhone 4
5th iPhone's name: iPhone 4S
Next iPhone will be the iPhone 5. Bet you a buck.

See a trend here?
1st iPhone's name: iPhone
2nd iPhone's name: iPhone 3G (3G being the new model name)
3rd iPhone's name: iPhone 3GS (3G being the model name with an S for midcyle spec bump)
4th iPhone's name: iPhone 4 (4 being the new model name and debuts with iOS5 - whodda thunk?)
5th iPhone's name: iPhone 4S (S for midcyle spec bump)
6th iPhone: iPhone 5 (5 being the new model name)
7th iPhone: iPhone 5S (S for midcyle spec bump)

Apple has pretty much established a pattern here. Those who think the next phone will be called the iPhone 6 are daft or trolls.

IT is the iphone 5. IF they would have changed the formfactor but left everything else the same inside, it would have been called the iphone 5 and everyone would have be happy with it.

Even as iPhone 4S, it's still selling like hotcakes. And, I would guess, the large majority of real people ( as opposed to us strange-o's who post on this site :D) are happy with the phone.

BTW: Do hotcakes really sell a lot?

This^^^ says it all. Seems to me unassailable logic.

Won't take the bet, because I'm sure the next phone will be iPhone 5.

(If you need to lay off any bets, I'll cover the action.:D:rolleyes:)

correct, but the iPhone 4 did not debut with iOS5, i think you meant to type iOS4.

Well that seems awfully smug. ESPECIALLY considering that when it comes to naming conventions or their own words then an "established pattern" has never existed for Apple.

The iBook was renamed Macbook
The iBook name now became for actual books
Release cycles are rarely (never?) consistent
Camera on and then off on Nano
Site updates/product releases tend to be Tuesdays but sometimes are on non-Tuesdays
Jobs opinion swaying on small screen video
Macbook being renamed Macbook Pro despite almost identical specs

We can go through the history of Apple and find dozens of times where Apple seems to be on one path and suddenly jumps to another and it's their right to do so. So to assume that anyone "knows" what Apple will do next is ridiculous. The next iPhone can be named based off a sequential release pattern or it can just as easily be renamed based off screen size variants. Nobody is an expert here.

Coming in 2012:

The MacPhone (next gen iPhone)
The iPhone (next gen phone book)

Anyways.. The iPhone 4s is not the iPhone 5.

But IF someone says "iPhone 5" and you still know exactly which product they're referring to then why is it such a big deal. You correct a person and move on, but instead some people try to act demeaning as if the person is someone "dumb" when the media has been calling the next iPhone the "iPhone 5" for the last 16 months.
