Momentus XT 750GB for 2011 MBP

I have been wanting an SSD but need at least 500GB and don't want to pay a mortgage note for one.... The momentus XT 500GB seems to have good reviews mixed with some issues in the MBP. I'm leaning on the 750GB for my Xmas list.

Does it appear the issues have been worked out with the latest sd28 firmware? Anyone on here have good/bad personal experience?

Setup: 2011 13" i5 and (soon to be) 16GB ram. I'm planning on staying in a single drive setup. Currently the HD is the 750GB 5400rpm hitachi. Mainly using the typical Mac apps (running lion) and run W7 x64 in parellels. I have an annoying amount of lag with the current HD and 8GB ram. I know 16 is a little overkill, but it hit my $200 price point and I find myself down to less than a gig free with the VM running while doing my usual stuff.

Just looking for feedback before pulling the trigger. I can't seem to find much on the 750GB version but overall good reviews on the 500GB. Some first hand reviews and not paid reviews would be appreciated.
 
Nice, if the price comes down a bit, I might pick this one up. 750 gb + 8gb SSD :p
 
There's barely a reference on Seagate's site.

I've been checking the news for months looking for a bigger model.

I was hoping for 1TB.

The XT 500GB was an extremely good performer in my MBP.
 
If you don't use the optical drive bay, this pricing puts it in competition with the traditional optibay + SSD solution. You can get a top tier 128gb SSD for that price. Nice drive but maybe not so relevant anymore.

They don't perform very well compared to SSD's and will probably have issues down the road like the last drive did. I'd just buy the fastest 1TB drive you can get, or save up for an SSD.

I don't get it when people say this. I can't compare 750GB vs 128GB of space. No matter how fast 128GB are, I need more space!
Of course I could compromise and leave stuff at home, or carry a portable hard drive, but I like having all my photos and music with me!

So yeah, I think it is very relevant! But to each his own. :D
 
I think what he's saying is that if you're willing to sacrifice your DVD drive, the SSD+HDD is the better option. That will give you a 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD for storage.
 
The 500GB started almost at $200, and then went down to $99 until the floods.

They are very competitive. If you don't do virtualization, you don't need an SSD.

Yeah, thats a sweet setup, but:
It is way more expensive
YOu end up doing the caching "manually" (by selecting what lives where)
I bet performance wise, you don't gain a whole lot
AND you sacrifice the dvd drive ( a whole other discussion, but to me that is a deal breaker)

(I have no experience with this kind of setup, but doesn't it complicate the usage of time machine??)

But yeah, I wish I had 1000+ $ to buy a 600GB SSD and then I would not be here nitpicking hahahaha

Vertex plus 120GB is $130 bucks. Samsung 1TB M8 is $110. That's $240 together and then you have 1128GB of storage.

Caching manually? not really. 120GB is enough to fit OS and all applications.

AND you sacrifice the dvd drive ( a whole other discussion, but to me that is a deal breaker)

Now that's the real deal breaker.

I personally wouldn't like opening up my MBP and replacing the DVD drive with an optibay. I prefer the Xt solution. But the price is too high at the moment in my opinion. $150 would be fair.

I sure as hell would not use a Vertex Plus, in fact any OCZ drives for that matter, especially in a MBP.

Fair price for a 750GB (pre-flooding) would be $109-$129. The 500GB was $74.99 at one point in October and usually around $89.
