Agree with this, $1000 for a tablet is too expensive. A good Windows laptop or Mac can be got for that price.

From the look of this, you appear to be saying the only real reason to buy a Tablet over a laptop is because a tablet costs less.

Implying it's a poorer product, and if you are going to pay laptop type prices, then you should get the laptop as it's obviously better.

Is that what you are saying?

A laptop has far more functionality than an iPad. For sure. At that price the iPad does indeed become a "poorer product".

No. The iPad is bordering on too expensive as it is. I'm saying this as a avid iPad 1 user. Because of the prices, I'm holding off on the iPad 2 and am waiting for an iPad 3 before upgrading. I just can't afford it.

When I bought my iPad, I wasn't sure how much space I needed. But since my music collection is on the iPhone, I didn't go all out and buy the 64GB model. Good idea since I'm currently only using 1/2 of my 32GB iPad 1 :) And much of what I have stored on the iPad is my photo collection.

I probably could sell my iPad for a decent price. I've seen people bidding up to $350 on eBay just for the SIM card with the unlimited plan!!!

I'll see what the 3 looks like next year. So far, with Apple products, I've never bought the next model. Went from iPhone 3G to 4, and haven't replace my 2008 Mac Pro yet. And waited until 2010 to buy a MBP, so I have a couple more years to wait for that.

Simple question really:

Would you pay another $150 (plus sales tax of course) for a 128GB iPad3 over a 64GB iPad3 ?

Given that the price difference between the 32 and 64 models is $80. So thats $80 for a 32GB difference ($160 for 64GB) but prices come down a bit as capacity goes up generally.

So, realistically a nice round number of an extra $150 would probably be around what you would expect, ish.

So would you? Is another 64GB of movie, and music storage worth $150 more?

And I suppose also, do you think Apple will up the RAM on the next model?

No, I would not pay an extra $150 for 128GB. That's too steep an increase for me. It is not unreasonable, but it is more than I am willing to pay.

At some point, tech innovations will allow prices to come down. But there are a couple of other issues here as well. The basic configurations of some MacBooks and other laptops come with only 64GB. So you are immediately committed to buying an external hard drive to back up your iPad if you keep a lot of stuff on your PC and the storage capacity of your iPad exceeds that of your laptop. This becomes more of an issue if you could buy a 128GB iPad.

Cloud storage and broadband pricing and speed is also an issue becoming more of a sticking point as people increase their use of iPads and other portable devices. The absence of true innovation here is ridiculous, and there would only be more strain on networks when people have extra GB to use. And the availability of cheaper, more reliable Internet service might allow more streaming, which in turn might reduce the need for more offline storage.

Interesting, and please note, I'm in no way disagreeing with you. I'm just exploring thoughts :)

So, how would you rate say a 32GB Ipad at £479 UK price to something like this:

Clearly there has to be a point where you weigh the benefits of having the mobile, touchscreen platform and weight of the iPad in comparison to a laptop. I think its appropriate around where the price is currently but once you get to $1000+ the power of laptops you can purchase outweighs the benefits of an iPad. Of course thats a completely subjective viewpoint.

I understand, however I'm not sure where the $1000 price point comes from.

You could get a very powerful Windows 7 laptop for the same price as a medium range iPad, and for far less than a higher end iPad.

People are obviously buying iPad's despite the fact they can buy far more powerful and versatile laptops, as they see them are different devices.

I suppose that's Apple's problem. will people buy Tablets that are more expensive than their MacBooks?

You hit on a key point here. Some people buy an iPad because that is the type of device they want. They do not need and are not looking for the supposed "power" and "versatility" of a laptop. If they cannot find what they want in a tablet, they might buy a Touch, or nothing at all.

Yes definitely! I want as much storage as possible! I have only about 10gb left on my 64gb iPad 1. I hate to manage my music, videos etc. I want to be able to put it all on there and leave it!! I hate having to check individual boxes to sync. I want the convenience of sync it all and go.

That being said, I just bought the iPad 1 at a discount after they released the iPad 2. I didn't think the iPad 2 had anything important to justify the difference over the discounted price of the old stock of iPad 1's. I'm eagerly awaiting an iPad3. I want.........(and expect in the iPad3)

the availability of 128gb (that'll do me for a good while) it's not too much to ask for this, as Jobs has indicated he expects these to be independent devices, my 250 gb MBP has been out of hard drive space many times already, and it's a pain to go through and find and delete stuff. If we will rely on tablets in the future, we need more space. The cloud? I don't like the idea yet of having to be "connected" in a wifi spot or have 3G to access my hard drive. Plus there's download speed to worry about and network reliability. Further, when your out, maybe you have to pay extra to use wifi somewhere! Why pay more to access your hard drive in the cloud? What if you travel and you're in another country and the internet is shaky at best? Apple has said they will allow 5gb for free in the cloud. I don't need to tell you that 5gb is not much, that's going from a 64gb iPad to 69gb, whoopdie doo! And, I don't need to tell you that they will charge you extra, (for ever) for add'l hard drive space in the cloud! I'd rather pay one time for a 128gb device and be done with it, and have 100% reliability/access anytime!

I want the higher res screen that's been talked about, either Retina or the double HD quality res talked about lately. I can def see the difference between my iPod touch 4g and my iPhone 3gs.

I also expect and want stereo speakers on the device. The competition is offering it, and it's a simple upgrade, so why not?

Other things that I'd "like" to see.

Well, Apple talks about tablets being the future of computing, as independent stand alone devices. I like the idea. The current iPad isn't there yet, it still needs a host. I'd like to see either a USB slot or a memory card reader. That way if your on vacation with your camera and iPad, you can just directly xfer your photos to your iPad immediately. One could also plug the iPad into any printer and print away from the USB, or with regards to my hard drive commentary above, one could also use an external hard drive if they wanted with the iPad. They are small and easy to carry around, and one can add a TON of space this way!

That's it! I wonder what you think?

No, I have no need for that. I really don't even need 32, but it's nice to have the padding. I suppose if one is away from home for extended periods, one may wish for more storage, however I find that for most the desire for more storage is a lack of knowledge about the options.

Some will cite wishing to dump photos to the ipad en masse, i assert flash cards are a lot cheaper and allow for quick duplication. Even for a week long trip after culling, I cannot see most needing more than 64gb.

That said, more is better... I personally would rather take a price drop than pay more for more storage.

No. Based on my current needs.

However, if my needs changed and that became something I needed, I'd have absolutely no qualms about buying one that size with that additional cost.

The only people who need that kind of space is those who want to put their entire library of music which is pointless. If you managed your music better 64 gigs would be more than enough.

For my own use, I agree. But often the reason why I keep my entire music library on my iPad is for the benefit of others.

I'd upgrade to an iPad 3 in a heart beat if it had 128GB of storage, I only bought the iPad 2 last weekend! Same goes for the iPhone, I'm still using a 3GS, had the storage increased to 64GB I would have upgraded to the iPhone 4 by now.

I keep a small amount of music on my iPad. On the other hand, I keep a lot of videos of movies and Tv shows, and subscribe to a number of magazines which let me archive back issues. Some of these issues, e.g., The New Yorker, can average more than 125MB.

Then, there are work related files, including large PDF files. Typically, I keep this all on my iPad, instead of moving it to my desktop, because I travel a lot and want to keep it on my iPad.

And so, I would love to see a 128 GB iPad, at a reasonable price.

My ideal next gen iPad would also include Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 support. A nice extra would be a faster processor and even better battery life. Higher screen resolution is low on my list of desired enhancements.
