I know this has been posted before, but I'm in between these. Some advice needed.

I'm replacing my 2011 MBP (came with 320hd) with the non touch bar 2017. I found the 256gb for 1,229 (new) and also the 128gb, which is on sale for 1,099. Is the $200 difference worth saving based on my needs?

Needs: Home use computer. Im fortunate my job (teacher) supplies me with a laptop for work. On my previous mbp i had 80gb filled up, some of which were wii full game downloads that I wouldn't transfer over to my new mbp.

Assuming i use 70gb, I had about 50gb left.....or i could have about 200gb free. It seems like I dont need the extra space but i've heard computers run better with more space in the hd.

Thanks

Save yourself future regret. Future proof with 256gb.

Always take the option larger than what you think you need. It's only $130 difference after all. You don't know how your needs will change and you'll be grateful having a computer that allows some flexibility rather than forcing you into using external drives and stuff (Which will end up costing more than that $130).

So same answer as always to these 128gb vs. 256gb... If you use 100gb currently, then get 256gb.

That was true with hard drives and older file systems, not today. There are a few exceptions but not relevant to your usage. What is true is you can’t add more internal storage if your needs change. Something to consider if you plan to keep this laptop as long as your current one.

Get the 13” Touchbar version from adorama. At $1300 with tax. Will have the 256GB drive and a better computer. Needs APINSIDER code at checkout.

Computer is this one:

https://www.adorama.com/acmlh12lla.html

Put code for discount. And no i’m not afiliated with anybody, i just like people to get better computer for the price.

You may regret the 128GB but are unlikely to regret the 256GB. Save yourself grief later on and go big.

I agree with others - 256 is a better idea for a system that is essentially non-upgradable...even if you can currently get by with 128.

Yes, there is no point of going with a 128GB computer on 2018. 128GB is the bare bones minimum and per standard retail industry is already lagging behind. It would be such problematic to even get resale value 1 year from now from a 128GB machine.

I would spend the difference in price for a 256GB that can keep a standard user happy, 128GB is what i can barely get by being a power user and i surely dont feel comfortable in 128GB. I am a power user who needs very little storage. I could get by my MBA 128GB with just a little of 10 GB spare. But had to be organized. I upgraded to 512GB which i never filled! ( I keep external ssd/hdd for storage,NAS and i prefer my data backup elsewhere instead of my computer) , but if 1TB would meet my needs in current usage i would go with 1TB.

I like my storage split. Most of my data outside of my computer. If it gets lost, fried, stolen not much do i lose with it. Get the storage size that fits your needs and do not spend more than you need, you will always need the money. In doubt, get the bigger one if dif is little.

In this specific case, 256GB is the size for you. I don’t know who would go for a 128GB in 2018.... unless cash constrain is too much that you can only afford a 128.

Please DO NOT get the 128, GET the 256GB whatever you do.

thanks for the advice

i saw the adorama deal and i missed out on the non touch bar deal yesterday. I went with microcenter-$1299 for the non touch bar 13.3 256gb 2017.

Will have to read about how to exactly best use my battery cycles. I did upgrade my 2011 mbp briefly with an ssd and ram but then i realized the battery was expanding (couldn't click trackpad) and my charger wasn't in great condition..so I returned the ssd and ram bc at that point it was like a putting money constantly into an old car when its best to just get new mac as long as im financially able to.

Ok I will go against the grain here and say 128gb Macbook Pro if you are a user like me.

I have a 512gb Macbook 2015 (currently on sale) but with my use of streaming videos mainly and web browsing, I went with the 128gb. I rarely access my iTunes library as its in my phone usually. I put my iTunes and all of my media on a 2tb usb-c harddrive I got 1 yr ago. I rarely access the media. It works for me.

Some would say with my use why I don’t just get an iPad or a cheaper computer. But I love the screen, keyboard, and speakers of the 2017 Pro and it’s been worth it. I like the larger screen that’s for sure.

Also some websites, like my bank company, doesn’t work on my iPhone. There’s just something’s a computer is needed.

128GB is completely viable and affordable for people who don't need more. The thing is to give sound advice based on user usage. I always recommend you to double what you currently use, if possible, to allow for an overhead. But if you currently use 40GB then you can absolutely live with 128GB.

Problem is a lot of people have a knee-jerk reaction to say that you need 512GB of storage, when all you do is internet banking... It's not worth having masses of free space on a premium cost and speed storage device when you could and should stick media on a much cheaper external drive. Only get the biggest drive you need unless you have the luxury of cash.

Ya I agree. I totally maxed out my 2015 with 512 and didn’t use it to it’s potential.

128gb is usable. But one must carefully manage what is on the drive, and one must know when to remove stuff that doesn't need to be there.

256gb is better, of course.

128gb is frankly a ripoff on any computer over $1,000. It's too little for a main computer imho, the 128gb is for students to take to lectures when they have a desktop with more storage capacity at home. It's annoying the answer is to give Apple more money for more storage, but that's about the size of it if you want a mac unfortunately. If you're using 70-80 of the approximately 100GB available to you out of the box straight off, it's not going to take long to start becoming insufficient.

Get the 128gb

Use that extra $200 to get the 16gb ram version

You can always buy a portable external SSD drive later if you need more space but you can’t upgrade the ram later

128GB SSD & 16gb ram>>>>>>>256GB SSD & 8gb ram
