Yeah, it's worthwhile to remember that the 12" iBook has already been EOL'd half a dozen times in its life, and it hasn't gone anywhere yet. :)

I personally would accept a 13.3" iBook if it were smaller in some overall sense and significantly lighter than my iBook. But I personally like the 12" normal aspect ratio setup pretty well too... :) But yes, there had better be an iBook or Powerbook in this size class or smaller next go-around!

12" is too small to begin with. 13.3" is a much more natural evolution to 15" and then to 17".

If anything, 12" is too big! I have a desktop, so when I buy a portable I want something that's small and, well, portable. I'd love to see the 12" replaced with 10.6" and 13.3" models.

I simply do not understand the lure of 15" and 17" laptops. To me that's not a portable it's a luggable. I know it fits the needs of some, so I'm not suggesting getting rid of them, but the 12" appeals to those of us that want something that's easy to tote around all over the place.

It's kinda funny, a lot of my co-workers laughed when I got a 12" PB. When they upgraded their laptops, they all went with Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. 17" laptops. They went on and on about how great those machines were and then a few weeks later they'd come by asking if anyone was interested in buying their laptop. Now, most of my co-workers are using 12" and 13.3" laptops and either using a desktop system at home or they have a large monitor they hook up to their laptops.

So, I think it's important to recognize that an awful lot of laptop buyers want something small and light. I'm pretty confident that Apple is smart enough to know that and if the 12" iBook is ditched they'll have another alternative that's about the same size or smaller. I'm just hoping they don't cut the small sized PB out and not replace it with another PB model that's in the sub-notebook range. I will never buy anything larger than a 12" or 13.3" and I will probably never buy an iBook after the problems I had with the one we own now.

On a side note, I had my 12" PB sitting on top of my fiancee's 12" iBook this morning. The 12" iBook looks huge compared to the PB and it's noticably heavier. All the more reason to hope Apple doesn't trim the PB line down to just a 15" and 17" option.

seriously though people, the size of a 13' widescreen is gonna be almost the same as a "square" 12'. (havent you all taken trig?)

If a 13' does come out, there's really no point in having a 12 inch display.

Yes, this is very true... Well, I hope they are 13" and 12" and not 13' and 12'. But you get the idea.

Something in the <3.5 lbs class with a slot-loading drive, in white, with a glowing Apple logo, would make me drool. :)

I'm with you on this one, except I'd like to see a carbon composite exterior in a color other than white. But I'm definitely down with a lightweight, widescreen laptop.

12" is a tad small, unless they can pump the screen resolution up to 1280x960; anything is better than 1024x768.
I disagree - I find the 12" 1024x768 form factor to be highly useful, and it's one of the reasons I have an iBook G4. It strikes a good balance. I have no need for HD video, I just want a simple, rugged laptop that *works* when I need it, and isn't a pain to carry back-and-forth to work every day.

12" rulers

12" is the way to go as far as portability is concerned. I intend on conquering the world with my 12" powerbook that I just purchased within the last 48 hours. I had a 1.25 Ghz 15" powerbook that i sold to a friend, in order to go to the 12" 1.5 Ghz powerbook, and i maxed out the RAM at 1.25, just for the heck of it. I already notice a big difference in the mobility...having a 12" is more convinient than a 15" as far as i'm concerned. However you do notice that the resolution of the screen is not quite as crisp...

EOL is usually reserved for a specific Model Number, rather than the whole line of iBooks (or any other products).

The timing of this one looks interesting, though. We're just weeks from Macworld. Add batteries to the Rumor Machines.

Dude, the new x86 Macs will be, by necessity, completely redesigned. Any design issues current machines have won't carry over.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Typed on a beloved iBook G4 12"

I'm typing this on my 12" iBook right now, and it is most definitely NOT too small. I want portability and style in a laptop before power (got a gaming PC for that), and the 12" iBook has both, even if it is a little on the heavy side.

I hope so. But, Apple has had a shakey track record with some of their i* consumer level products... particularly Rev A. Even my Rev A PB had some annoying design issues (rubber footies falling off constantly, crooked screen, warped keyboard, warped case)... even my Rev C PB still rocks on a flat surface and the metal/plastic interfaces look sloppy.

I think the Vaio is one of the best engineered laptops and I'm hoping that the Vaio engineers Apple hired work their magic on the new laptops. If we get a Vaio-like laptop with a faster Intel CPU even at the same price things are now, I'll be very happy.

Scroll down the page a bit...

An indication that the 17" might go also??? In the individual item listings the 12" & 17" are referred to as End Of Line Products.

These guys are a large official apple re-seller.

nothing really new there. the apple reseller at the University of Michigan has been selling off their powerbooks at extremely cheap prices (think HD 17" PB w/ applecare for under 2g).

sadly I'm not a UM student.

No, that is the 1400x900 resolution version of the 17" PowerBook (which has been EOL'd by the late 2005 model). The late 2005 model has a slighly better resolution: 1680x1050.

Heh, reading through this thread I though Lacero was back  ...then I realized it was resurrected from December. Oh, well. I would dig a 13.3-inch iBook as well. New form factor with a trackpad capable of both right and left click please!

Where did Lacero go? :(

Yes, and if they feel the need to be pretentiously Apple, they can just make it be one button that's mounted on a fulcrum and is right/left click depending on the side you push it on.

Widescreen iBook would be nice, but I think that's one of the symbolic differences between the iBook and the Powerbook.

I would hate to see the iBook 12" go EOL. I'm currently saving for one for this summer. While I wouldn't mind getting a 12" Powerbook, the extra cost for it would take longer to obtain. Besides, the iBook would be perfect for what I need it for, which is basic on the road tasks that my current P133 Toshiba can't handle anymore.

What about this:

12'' iBook
13'' PB
15'' PB
17'' PB

nice roundup.

I mean, the 14'' iBook wasn't that popular.

If mentioned before, I'm sorry.
