I have an ipad pro 9.7 and it came with a 10W charger (model A1357).
I needed another charger for it so I went to apple store and bought a 12W charger (model A1401) because this was the only power adapter they had.

Would this 12W charger be compatible with my ipad pro 9.7? I'm afraid that it might cause problems like shortening my battery life, etc.

Nobody has a good answer to that question. It's one of the few times I think it's actually probably for profit.

Any charger Apple makes will work. I'm using the 29W USB-C charger with my 9.7-inch iPad Pro and it works just fine, actually charges significantly faster.

I remember reading the 29W doesn't charger any device besides the 12.9 faster, so I'm surprised your 9.7 is charging faster. So although compatible, I'd be surprised if that is the case.

I haven't taken time, but having 3 29W chargers around ( I like to charge fast when I'm sitting down and also charge my 12.9, 9.7 and iPhone with them as well) I have noted it does charge my 9.7 a bit faster. Not as much as it improves charging my 12.9, there it made a huge improvement, but it did help a bit. Especially in the 30-80% range it seems to help.

Probably relative to a 10W charger. Most people don't realize the charger that comes with their iPad doesn't charge at the maximum speed of 12W. And 20% faster is definitely noticeable.

My comment was related to 12w charger vs the 29w, as I don't think using the 29w on the 9.7 will make any difference although Steve.P.JobsFan wrote it was significantly faster. But I don't know compared to what? But since this thread is about the 12w that is what I would assume :)

It will charge the 9.7 but at the 12w max rate, only the 12.9" is built to support the higher charge rate from 29w.

Any news if the 12.9 has support for the new USB-C chargers used by the new Macbook Pros? They are 61w and 87w. Doubtful - but curious if they many any difference or if they are useable but max out at 29w for the iPad 12.9.

Yes that is what I meant, Steve.P.JobsFan probably didn't realize that it's faster only because his previous charger is only 10W.

I have hopes. The 61W doesn't seem too likely, but 87W is 3 times of 29W, a whole multiple. I cannot find any electrical specifications, but if the new 15" MacBook Pro charges at 14.5V/6A, it is conceivable that the 87W charger will output 14.5V/2A as well.

Came across this on twitter: https://twitter.com/Broooks/status/795390693455831040

Likely a safe guess that the new 61W and 87W chargers will not only not charge at a faster rate than 29W, but might not even charge at 29W according to the output options).

I wonder if anyone has tried yet?

Curious though - the 12.9 has approximately a 38Wh battery, and if it can charge at 29W then I would think it can do a charge to 80% in pretty decent time before it starts to taper off - if this is the case is an even faster charger needed?

Well, I didn't expect to charge the iPad Pro at anything faster than 29W. I was simply hoping that since 87W is a multiple of 29W, the charger would support it easily. Apparently as you have found, it doesn't :/

Ahh - gotcha.

I purchased a iPad Pro 9.7 recently and it came with a 12W charger. It was pretty recent build because it came with 10.0.2.

That's interesting. They definitely came with a 10W charger last time (Anandtech Review, scroll to "Charge Time"). Perhaps the Pros now come with the 12W charger as standard?

Nice find. That doesn't look good. I've sent an email to Apple and am waiting for an official response on this.

Sadly the response is typical of Apple... they can't disclose any other information, so we'll have to wait until the adapter is available before we can tell for sure.

It should be easy to test for it though. 12W v 29W is a vast difference. I'll probably buy an adapter to try it out and return it if it doesn't work out.

Sorry to bump an (kind of) old thread, but I just bought an iPad Pro 9.7, Silver, Wi-Fi only, 128 GB from the Apple Store on Black Friday (11/25/2016) and it also came with a 12W charger. I thought it came with a 10W charger so I was surprised.

I also picked up a 9.7 pro from Verizon on Black Friday, and it came with a 12w charger. Apparently, Apple is either 1) clearing out remaining stock of 12w chargers or 2) deciding that the step back to a 10w charger for a device capable of a 12w charging input was a dumb idea.

Well I'm hoping that the next generation of iPads and iPad Pros all come (and support) the USB-C 29W charger and cable. Although we might need two cables in the box in that case (one for USB-A to USB-C).

I just got my Air 2 32GB from Target's Black Friday and was surprised to see that it also came with a 12W charger. Apple might be phasing out the 10W altogether.
