my nephew first Said official apple stored tried to charge him $400 for battery replacement. When he showed them the official Apple webpage with the $199. They reduced it down to $199. But now they are charging $78 labor?

Is this normal?

Yes, charging labor time is justified on top of part cost. Apple labor is ridiculously cheap though. Helping to close PSPs in the US

That seems very reasonable. Your battery should be good for 3-5 years now.

The labour should be included in those $199... According to the official Apple website, that is the price of the entire replacement, not price of parts. The parts themselves will cost well under $100...

I did a battery replacement on my 15 inch 2012 Out of Warranty rMBP last week and the only charge was for the $199 part. The price is actually very reasonable when you consider that they are replacing the entire top of the case so you get a new keyboard/Trackpad?Aluminum case where your hands rest and battery. I'm not sure if the speakers are new as well.

The charge was originally $199 plus $100 labor but the Genius says that Apple will do it for NO LABOR charge. I'm not sure if that's just for my particular model or not.

Interesting. The laptop is out for battery replacement. Says 3-5 days. Will see what they say with the final price.

I've got a mid-2010 15", Apple says battery service is $129.

Can I just walk in and buy it myself? It takes 30 seconds to install on these old models.

i would change it myself. i still have a 2011 MacBook pro and when battery was no longer holding a hour, i replaced it on my own. Bought the kit on amazon for around $60

Update to story

Well my nephew got his laptop back today.

Total charge ended being only $199 plus sales tax. So no $78 labor charge.
