O Donny Boy
Pretty much as per the subject header...

The 13.4.1 update on both my 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max and my 2020 MacBook Pro M1 has very kindly broken the ability to mount a number of my WD My Passport drives, as well as my Pioneer BDR-XD07 burner.

Hook said devices up to my old Intel MacBook Pro running 13.4 and they, annoyingly, mount perfectly fine and dandy.

Any ideas? Is it a known issue? This is the first real issue I've had in an update for many, many years.

TIA.

How are they connected to your Mac? Do they show up in System Report?

I have just spent 1 hour with Apple support discussing this issue. It seems to affect printers and external drives using USB 3. in my case my external memory sticks and printers disconnect every 5 seconds in a continuous cycle. I can workaround this by plugging into a USB 4 (thunderblot) port which seems to work ok in 13.4.1, but this is far from ideal!

So interestingly, I sat down earlier this morning to take a look at the "System Report" and report back.

But upon attaching one of the drives in question I noticed the quickest "flash" of the "Allow accessory to connect?" window... it was an incredibly brief flash of said window before it closed itself down.

I proceeded to open up "System Settings > Privacy & Security" and set "Allow accessories to connect" to "Always" (they're mine, I can trust them) and...

Boom! The devices now connect, no issues, no nothing.

Not a clue as to why this suddenly became a thing, but for anyone else who maybe experiencing a similar issue then take a look under "System Settings > Privacy & Security" settings.

Thanks all :)

Definitely not there! I mentioned this to Apple support and they didn’t respond.
I am thinking that there must be a difference between laptops and desktops in this respect, but goodness knows why?!?

Interestingly, although 13.4.1 has definitely killed the Studio’s USB 3 ports for external drives, memory sticks and printers, if I connect a wired mouse it operates OK.

Apple support have confirmed that this issue is not specific to my machine/configuration - they have committed to coming back to me in 3 days time! Bottom line is that Mac Studio M1 USB 3 ports are compromised by 13.4.1 upgrade…..

That is interesting - Apple Support ran a series of checks/tests with me and confirmed that it was in some way connected to the upgrade from 13.4.0 to 13.4.1

Under tech support guidance, I did a fresh install of 13.4.1 and also created a new test user account.
They also ran some tests to confirm that my hardware is ok.
The problem remains……

I've just fired up my M1 Mac mini and updated to 13.4.1... and you're right on the money... it ain't there!!?

However, the drives are mounting without issue.
