13" and Photography

I returned my 2018 i9/32GB/1TB/Vega20 for a baseline 13" touch bar.

I find myself loving the form factor of this 13", and always felt the 15" with its tiny keyboard encased in that surrounding dead aluminum body lacked the aesthetics of the 13".

I shoot with a Canon 5DIV with a Canon 24-70 2.8L II and a Canon 100-400 II

Am I crazy to have this much invested in the camera and not utilize the real estate of a 15"?

I've owned nothing but 15" MBP's and connect it to a 27" display at home and for most of my location shoots. I see no problem if the 13" MBP is offered with at least an i7, 16GB RAM and sufficient ports. The smaller size will also make more bags available to you and fit in airline overhead bins easier.

I have the baseline 8GB.

My 8GB 2014 13" rMBP uses most of it's RAM in just Lightroom and Photoshop. Yellow and red Memory Pressure.
If I bought any Mac right now, it would at least have 16GB.

I’d not photo edit on a 13” or 15” laptop. Far too small.

I love the form factor of my MacBook Air, but it’s not for my photography.

Who cares what other people think. If it's working for you, great. If it isn't, you know what to do.

I have my 13“ since 2013. Works great for me.

As said, if it works for you then great. I have an ancient 15" MB pro that I use for meetings and travel abroad as I can afford to loose it. It is maxed out with 6GB of RAM and still handles the latest Photoshop. With larger files I need to quit out of all other applications and it can get a bit slow when it starts to use the SSD as virtual memory. It works though at a push. I'd have opted for the 16GB on your 13" because even if you don't need it today it is likely to extend its useable life.

I connect my 13” MacBook Pro to an external monitor for photo editing. I also use a 5DIV for architectural images and have not had any issues, even with heavy use of layers in Photoshop.

I like the 15in MBP cause its the same size as a 8x11 paper. The largest in house that I would print would be letter paper size. I can zoom in if I want to pixel peep. If you are someone that's going to be editing a heavy amount of images, you should find what fits best for you.

I think it’s fine if it works for you. I’ve done many edits on my iPad Pro 12.9, so it’s not like it’s impossible. Based on the model you just returned, it sounds like you should have some money left over to get a good monitor, so you may be able to have the best of both worlds anyway.
