I ordered a 15" 2.66Ghz MBP, just because it had the Graphics Card. If the High-end 13" had the 9600M GT, I would've gone for that, but as the price was already high in the first place, I thought might as well go for the one that's definitely going to last me.

The 13" Macbook Pro fixed all the things I hated about the previous 13" unibody Macbook: the ****** display, the lack of FireWire, not to mention it seems most of the random problems people had with the unibodies have been fixed now too.

I'd kinda like to buy one but I don't have a pressing need for a laptop (though using one at work instead of my awful work computer running XP would be nice) at the moment. Might wait to see what the next generation brings.

I thought long and hard before going with the 15". I wanted to do photo editing in the field, and the extra real estate of the 15" screen makes that easier. (The 17" would have been even better in that regard but the darn thing is just to unwieldy to carry around!)

But if I didn't have that particular requirement, the 13" is surely where I would have ended up.

It's cheaper, compact, portable with better screen and more features. I think the success is pretty justified and I can only see it getting better as more people see their friends' macs and realize it's worth it.

15" was never an option, because true portability with a small footprint are my first priorities when buying a notebook.
For everything desktop nothing beats an 8-core Mac Pro.

Last october I would have rushed out to get the current MBP 13" without hesitation. Unfortunately that dreadful FW-less unibody Macbook with its crappy display presented then was such a joke. So I went for a used white Macbook instead.
Too late for Apple, they lost my sale!

But I'm not the least surprised about the success of the Pro. With FW800 and the improved display they added a lot of functionality and thus the 13" model became a viable option even for videographers, musicians, graphic designers and photographers.

The original unibody Macbook was just fanboy/switcher fodder which has already turned into a fad...

1)...

2) I can't imagine someone buying an air now. Whats up with no design update? Where is the glass trackpad and black border? It looks like an odd ball.

...
This is so true. I needed a laptop for my program at school, and it will be my secondary computer, so I thought a MBA would be really great. But the fact that it hasn't been updated to match all the MBPs kind of set me off because I knew it was only a matter of time before its updated.

I opted for the 13" MPB, but its a better choice for me because after school its going to my fiance for her main computer.

I don't see why anyone would be surprised. Before the name change, the 13" MacBook was already Apple's best seller. Introduce a price drop and sales will increase. Sure there were changes, FireWire, better screen and battery but the general public aren't/were not looking out for that (proven by how well the 13" MacBook was doing as Apple's best seller). I think the success would've turned out the same if there was a drop in price and there were no changes. Oh yeah, having the "Pro" at the end of "MacBook" doesn't hurt either.

the price cut (+ back to school promo) + FW + super battery is what got me to finally bought my first Mac.

I work for Best Buy, and these things fly off the shelves. They practically sell themselves. Apple did a great job!

why did you get a 15 over 13?

in your opinion at bestbuy what is the demographic for the 13, college students?

with the success of the 13"MBP Apple runs into the problem that for the price of a MBA you get a 13"MBP and one of the rumored tablets.

I hope the 13"MBP won't kill the NBA because it's a nice machine and many love it.

congrats on your first mac. but anyway I don't understand it in a way the specs of the old uniMacbook and the new macbook pro 13" are almost the same they have a slightly faster processor but the same gpu and everything else the only thing that really changed was the title lol.

Well, there's the 7 hr battery, price cut, better screen, FW800, SD card slot, new name, backlit keyboard standard...

I will soon be getting my first mac a 13" powerbook.

I think the reason they shift so quick is the portability. I know a 15" isnt that much bigger or heavier but as this is mainly for when im travelling (but no on business) its ideal for me.

Wouldnt have go one if they only offered 15" and 17" models. 13" is just right for my needs.

As for the bit about only students buying them? load of crap if you ask me.

I don't think it's accurate saying ONLY students are buying them. I think it's more fitting to say that there probably is a large percentage of MacBook's being purchased by students and why shouldn't there be?

Why would there not be more buying 15"? it makes no sense to me to think students would generally buy 13".

I LOVE the size of the 13 inch. If it had an express card slot I'd have one now.

But I'm the 1 in a million that use the slot : /

The price on the 13" vs the 15" 9400m machine is a steal. If you need more screen you have the option of hooking up to a bigger screen and running it at 1920 X 1200.

They buy the 13" because it's cheap. Same reason people still buy the macbook.

That probably is the main factor. Let me throw it back to you, why would you get the 15"? For the most part, I don't think college students really care about features. They just want something small that can do internet and load up Word. Sure you can say 13" to 15" isn't that big of a difference, yeah if you're carrying it by itself but when you have a few textbooks, you need something small as possible and the 13" fits the ideal computer for students if they're looking for a Mac.

I do minor gaming and needed a dedicated GFX card. I like to watch movies too, so the larger screen was good for that. Actually, my 13" uMB 2.0 is on eBay as I type this.

As far as the demographic goes, at least for Best Buy, is student with mom or dad and their credit card. But nothing wrong with that!

love my 13 mbp, first mac, did give hack a shot on my old intel atom setup, my gf pretty much made me switch (she used to own a old white 2.0ghz) , was gonna do for a all out desktop and so glad i didnt, does everything i want it too and more! now if i can only find a good bagpack, mouse and wireless router :)

It's not just that it's a "Pro" now. The MacBook has always been a hot seller. Definitely the best selling laptop line since the Intel transition, and possibly the best selling Apple Computer since the switch. It's cheap, it's portable and overall, it's a good quality machine.
