Mid 2012 13" MBPs are often prone to failure of the cable that connects the disk to the computer. This would show up when doing things that are disk-intensive such as installing/updating an operating system. For a while, Apple was replacing the cables for low or no cost, but they may have stopped doing that. You might bring the computer to an Apple Store if you have one nearby to have them check it.

same issue with 10.14 installer? I am not suggesting to install, just to check whether the issue can be reproduced.

Plus: i had a similar issue when booted from recovery partition due to incorrect date/time settings

Try downloading and running the 10.13.6 "combo updater".
You can get it here:

what is this combo updater?

no, I tried weeks ago 10.14 and worked fine, downgraded only because of software compatibility

wouldn't it fail even when reinstalling 250gb of disk data from my time machine?

Rather sounds like upgraded firmware that prevents this version from being installed. Check the logs.

Not necessarily. The install may have a checksumming step that fails while copying data won't.

Apple has not made any firmware updates that block earlier versions of operating systems from installing.

Nobody had made such a claim. However, I had a similar issue related to and which was solved by updating firmware.

If you haven't tried the "combo updater" I mentioned above .... TRY it.
Then get back to us with your report.
