Question for iPhone 12 mini or 13 mini users. How’s the font size on the phone working out for you? What size do you use, and whether you use corrective lenses or not?

I went to an authorized reseller store and played around with the 13 mini. I’ve been planning to get the phone, and font size is one of the concerns since I have presbyopia. I thought it was fine, but then I checked the setting and the font size was set to be the largest… 😅

I wear progressives and have a 13 mini. Font size is identical to my previous iPhone 11, you just see less lines of text in a screen. Plus you can crank font scaling up in settings.

Did they have a 13 or 13 pro to compare it to?

Did you use normal (middle slider) size or larger size?

They did, and I was comparing both at first and I thought they were both fine. But then as I was going to leave, I checked the settings and the mini was at the max font size setting. 😅 Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to compare them in more details. Probably will the next time I'm there again.

Mini at the max type setting seems...way too big for me, but if it works I don't see a problem. I too have presbyopia, use progressives (my add value is +1.75, pushing 50 over here), and I have my font size adjusted pretty low, it looks like. I'm at notch 5 on the 12 notch scale, so it appears (and I don't think I've adjusted that at all on this phone, it carried over from my previous phone, a 12 pro, and I never changed it). Very easily legible with no eye strain, but if I needed to adjust it up I wouldn't have a problem with it, unless my sight were bad enough even corrected that setting it to 12 or whatever the highest is didn't work. First thing in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it's still legible, but I do grab my specs asap (but then that was true even before I downsized to the mini). I see well enough without the glasses to check email and maybe laze around reading a kindle book (my settings in that app being Bookerly at halfway on it's adjustability scale, looks like 7 out of 14).

And pictures being worth a thousand words, here are a couple screenshots straight out of the phone of this page and my current settings.

The physical size (at the default setting) of text on the Mini is actually smaller than the Se, 11, Xr, etc. - because it keeps the same ratio of font to screen size as the 13/13 Pro (and 12/12 Pro), but just squeezes it down to fit in the smaller screen. I don't deal with presbyopia, but at times it just "feels" too small for me. Not sure why that is. If I bump up the text a notch or two, it feels too crowded on the small screen to me. I absolutely love everything about the Mini line (especially the 13), but this is one nitpicky complaint I have about it from my perspective. 70% of the time it's a non-issue, but there are just certain situations where I look at it and it feels too small. Maybe my eyesight is just going as I get older. :p

I use the smallest text size in display settings. I’m near-sighted and use corrective lenses.

I don’t have to squint at all. I enjoy seeing more info on the display while also making it more difficult for people to read what I’m looking at (🤣).

My brother notice and was shocked at how tiny the font was. Haha.

When I had the 12 mini set to large text. I would have a problem with iMessage. The back arrow at the top left corner was hard to use because the screen was to small for the largest font.
I do not use corrective lenses. I do sometimes use reading glasses.

How do I make my font small. Am using 11 pro max

I don't know. my own stops at 80 biggest size is 135. I wish there was a way to reduce it to 50

Gents ... these two posts are CRITICAL for so many that ignored the mini due to just its size and worrying about their eyes.

I applaud you both for taking the time to mention your unique insights!

That's incorrect.

The physical size (at default setting or any setting) of text on any iPhone mini is actually smaller than the SE/11/Xr etc due to the Pixels Per inch on a smaller screen! It's sharper but since its a 5.4" screen, what it draws will be smaller than on a 6.1" screen with lower pixel density.

Think of your light-bright toy OG versus something smaller per light placed on a smaller board. Now take binoculars and zoom in. Same principle here. analogy seems ridiculous i know but it's the only way I can think of right now to show you what's really happening.

So the perception of 'feels too small' is due to pixel density, being sharper, on a smaller screen (5.4") vs pixel density being less, less sharper, on a bigger screen (6.1") where iOS does it's pixel adjustment to reconcile legibility.

Cheers.

Oh and for the OP:
My Text Size is the 2nd lowest setting. I'll be doing this on my 13 mini when it arrives this weekend. I don't have 20/20 vision for the last 12yrs but my prescription is odd - right eye see closer, left eye sees farther (when reading/driving) - they both compensate one another so I only reach for glasses when reading a book or when I drive as I must on the latter. due to my eyes night driving lights without glasses blur my vision.

on macOS or Win10/11 I always have resolution at 1920x1080/1920x1200 or higher at minimum, small icons on desktop/taskbar.

I appreciate the appreciation! I was trying to be thorough, and this is exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to know before getting a mini myself. I did browse around on them in stores and once a coworker got one last spring (whenever the green came out) I bugged him by airdropping sites to him and app links and asking for screenshots (he was a great sport). Ultimately, having one and using it is the ultimate test and the mini passed.

This new SE rumor round should light a fire under anyone considering the mini. I never had much hope that the mini would be the basis for the next SE and still don't, but I do think these phones are worthwhile enough and have enough of a following that we'll see another mini in the lineup eventually.

Excellent - and THAT is how people should shop for a phone, amongst other things (clothes comes to mind).

I do agree that although earlier in this/last weeks rumour of the iPhone SE 4 may have the Xr's shell being a major mistake, this latest news SHOULD have Apple rethink that altogether.

and my reasoning for this happening - knowing it would not be successful ...

ROFLMAO ... YES! I KNEW this would happen!

And people here thought it would be great and harped at the 12 mini (8 months after launch to decide production change) or 13 mini (4 months after launch production change) !!! Clearly Apple marketing team had a POOR decision and had more power over the iPhone product line vs the leads.

Poor decision.

This is NOT a price issue ... it's a consideration of VALUE!
- Screen size is big that most here and globally THOUGHT they wanted.
- there is nothing of VALUE in just having a larger screen iPhone and nothing else to go with it.

EVERY larger screen iPhone after the 6S had either 1 more camera, 1 more camera (pic + vid) feature set, screen orientation features the regular iPhone's did NOT have. A more premium build and stood out visually from the regular iPhone. This trend has continued and now with the Pro and Pro Max have a better, faster and more unique software and hardware implementation with Dynamic Island.

The perceived VALUE of the consumer feels they 'should' be getting something more with the big screen, yet they know they're not.

Contrast that with the iPhone mini's ... mini users are not perceiving nor actually getting ANYTHING LESS in VALUE from the regular iPhones - except battery capacity and battery life (along with slightly slower charging speeds: 12w vs 15w). But there is nothing lossed in VALUE ... when actually we're gaining in value that we want: 1 handed use all around, lighter device, more compact and sleek and suits a more active lifestyle or frugal app lifestyle.

this is about value, not price and the Plus doesn't grant 'more' value to go along with its size.

Gives me hope.

FYI my iPhone 13 mini 512GB in Starlight arrived last night. I went out to pick it up while having a bad cold at FedEx cause I wasn't going to wait another day since they cannot phone me upon arrival as my buzzer code doesn't connect to my phone line. Going to see if my carrier will allow a colour swap in store since all colour options are back in stock now.

I have display zoom enabled in settings >Display and fonts set to the following on a PM device 🤣 and guess what ? I still need to wear my reading glasses 😂
