Mine has fried as well

My 85w Macbook pro adapter fried itself yesterday afternoon. I have rung Apple and every reseller in Sydney and a replacement is nowhere to be found. 4 - 6 weeks is what apple says .

Luckily I have a few mates with MacBooks so I am using one of their chargers instead. I know the wattage is different so I have been watching the temperature of the power brick carefully.

I have read on other forums that it is ok to use the 60w adapters. You must make sure of a few things though. Either the computer is off and the battery is charging. OR Use the computer whilst plugged in and the battery is fully charged (ie green light). The 60 W power adapter cannot charge the battery and run the computer at the same time. Just one or the other.

This is confirmed - I am typing this on my macbook pro with the battery charged, plugged into the wall. Believe it or not, the brick is cooler to touch than the 85watt one. Maybe it was on its way out a while back???

I have included some pics of my cable. This happened in 4 hours - I plugged it in just after lunch yesterday with no visible signs of wear. By 4:00pm it was like this!!

I had an iBook G4 power adapter spark up. Under warranty.

Apple is very careful to fix these problems right away. It's likely a mix of caring very much that their customers live to buy again, and that their customers live.

Good for them that they appear to be fixing these after warranty expiration. For this it's best to deal with Apple directly.

I've got another question according to a kind of this topic.

I bought my new macbook just 3 Months ago. One night my cat got hungry and bite the cable between the power adapter and the macbook into 2 parts.

Is there any possibility to get a new one due warranty or isn't there any chance?

Rather I casted the cat out... i't not my cat anymore... but erm.. my girlfriend took that small devil so it's still mine... somehow.. but it's her cat. whatever...^^

I think you understood what I questioned actually :p

No, the warranty doesn't cover physical damage caused to the product by the owner, or the owners cat lol

They will absolutely replace it for free. Mine didn't explode, fortunately, but it did melt. I wasn't even under warranty nor am I the original owner of my macbook, but they replaced it without a penny out of my pocket. Thanks Apple!

(of course I'm not referring to the demon...err cat)

Cmon man... look at that magsafe connector and cord. They are both beat to crap. Just LOOK at the pics closely. I agree with the poster that said when those wires get twisted and bent enough they will short circuit.

This comes from abuse more than anything. If people would take care of thier things this wouldnt happpen. Alas we live in a disposable world...

Exactly. I was about to say the same thing.

IN THIS SPECIFIC CASE, that thing looks more beat up than a 5 year old iBook connector.
