Post your feel when nTB is the best keyboard layout and easy bootcamp eGPU but:
  • no additional cores
  • no processor update
  • no 3rd gens keyboard
  • Step Daddy Cook no loves you like Papa Steve

Honestly this comes as no surprise to me. Everyone keeps saying they are hoping Apple will release an updated non-Touchbar version but it’s been pretty clear from advertising that Apple sees the Touchbar model as being the future now. I won’t be surprised if next year we see Apple drop the non-Touchbar Pro model completely

Yeah, I'm bummed about this... as a software dev function keys are important, esp. when I'm debugging. Unfortunately doubling the # of cores is more important, so I cannot resist the update.
You can force the function keys to show permanently on the Touchbar... I forget where/how you turn on this setting but I know I’ve seen it done.

I'm aware, it's the aspect of feeling real keys so I don't have to look down as I step through code. It's not a huge annoyance, mind you, but enough of one that I opted to have my company get me a maxxed nTB in lieue of a maxxed 13" TB. The quad-core is just too hard to resist though.

Ah yes, fair enough. I didn’t know because some people don’t realise you can force the keys onto the Touchbar.

I can agree with that tactile difference. On my company provided windows I use for analytical work I use the function keys constantly, so I can understand completely. I have the same feeling about all the rumors of solid state keyboards that use a touchscreen keyboard. There is a certain satisfaction/confirmation about the feedback a physical key gives when pressed that pressing a flat screen doesn’t give. But sadly it appears Apple isn’t turning aware from that Touchbar, they already nixed the non Touchbar version of 15” MacBook Pro.

I wish I had the budget to trade in to the new quad-core 13”, but going to have to save up and wait.

I wouldn't run out and purchase one myself, not right away at least, but I'm in a somewhat (un)fortunate position being on the job hunt, having come out of a recently failed startup. I'm unsure if I may go with the 15" this next go-around now that the TB is mandatory. Fingers crossed I'll have one of these under my non-grubby hands in a month or so.

Well best of luck on the job hunt! And yeah I’m fine with my current 2017 MBP and I’ll let others test out their luck with the new models first, before I remotely even think about if it’s worth trading up for one of the new machines.
