So the advise is to max out everything then, because apps will be more demanding someday?Yes, just like 64MB used to be ok. The standard is going up, might as well preempt it.

So your logic is thatits much better advice than to go with the specs of the entry base model because computers last longer and longer nowadays.
the lowest entry model is only for the lightest use.
all computer manufacturers do this to so they can say: look we sell computers starting at this "really low price".
more ram helps the gpu cause it's shared vram. yes, more is better cause ram gets full usage.
apple made a big mistake with yosemite transparency. it creates the jerkyness. it's on by default and turning it off should not be hidden in the accessibility prefs. the gpu on retina models is also generally underpowered.
So your logic is thatshould force everyone to just buy a maxed out macbook, just in case they need it in the future?

How many times do we need to discuss, how to read the activity monitor? No, that is exaggerating my post. If you get 4, it will be restricted by the next OS release. It already is restricted, my 2010 MBP with 8GB of RAM commonly uses just under 4GB on idle, with no apps running besides Finder.

You've been a member for eight years. Haven't you read all the other ram threads?
Now the ad hominems are starting. At this point I call a troll.
Fair enough. I see your point. This just has been discussed here at nauseum over years.Bad form dude... just because it's an "old discussion" to you, doesn't make it uninteresting to others. Just find a new thread if you are so bored. I for one was enjoying reading this until a few posts ago.
Well, the RAM debate aside (though I think 4GB should still be ok for some time), I saw this at SlickDeals on the current 8GB/128GB version. If I can only get my hands on a 10% movers coupon to make it even $10 less than the 2013 4/128 model that I just ordered...

My wife has the base 2014 13" MacBook Air which seems to run perfectly fine with the 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD configuration. Via the Apple Refurb Store, they have the Late 2013 13" 4GB/128GB retina MacBook Pro for just $999.00.

Does anyone here actually have this model and are there any concerns with it? Mainly the RAM and driving that retina display. The 128GB storage is plenty for me, though, I have read here that the 256GB SSD is faster in benchmarks. Thanks!
I just ran to my local Best Buy at lunch. Grabbed the movers coupon at the post office on the way to work this morning. $989.99 pre-tax (also used $200 in RZ certs I had). Sweet deal!
Unless the refurb from Apple comes with some free internal upgrade (happened once to me in the past where it had an i7 instead of i5), I think this 8/128 2014 model is the keeper and the refurb will be going back.
