So the advise is to max out everything then, because apps will be more demanding someday?

its much better advice than to go with the specs of the entry base model because computers last longer and longer nowadays.

the lowest entry model is only for the lightest use.

all computer manufacturers do this to so they can say: look we sell computers starting at this "really low price".

more ram helps the gpu cause it's shared vram. yes, more is better cause ram gets full usage.

apple made a big mistake with yosemite transparency. it creates the jerkyness. it's on by default and turning it off should not be hidden in the accessibility prefs. the gpu on retina models is also generally underpowered.

So your logic is that :apple: should force everyone to just buy a maxed out macbook, just in case they need it in the future?

No, that is exaggerating my post. If you get 4, it will be restricted by the next OS release. It already is restricted, my 2010 MBP with 8GB of RAM commonly uses just under 4GB on idle, with no apps running besides Finder.

How many times do we need to discuss, how to read the activity monitor?
You've been a member for eight years. Haven't you read all the other ram threads?

Bad form dude... just because it's an "old discussion" to you, doesn't make it uninteresting to others. Just find a new thread if you are so bored. I for one was enjoying reading this until a few posts ago.
Fair enough. I see your point. This just has been discussed here at nauseum over years.
Then someone comes along and it starts allover again.

Just because the activity monitor shows that Yosemite or Mavericks use a certain amount of ram, it doesn't mean that you actually need this amount.
Example: My 8gb rmbp blocks 7.99gb right after boot-up. The 4gb blocks 3.99. And so on.
I recommend these threads for some further reading:

Well, the RAM debate aside (though I think 4GB should still be ok for some time), I saw this at SlickDeals on the current 8GB/128GB version. If I can only get my hands on a 10% movers coupon to make it even $10 less than the 2013 4/128 model that I just ordered...

That is one hell of a deal! Obviously if the price is the same, get the one with 8GB of ram but if money is an issue, you will be fine with the 4GB model.

Nice try... Yosemite likes more RAM on startup. 4GB almost, to be exact. (My MBP is on Mail and Safari and it's using 4.71GB) So why wouldn't I advise to get 8GB?

The deal above is tempting especially with the 10% movers coupon. However, I'm concern about the 128GB/8GB; how will it handle Photoshop or Adobe Premiere for light editing? Am I better of with 16gb's ram?

My wife has the base 2014 13" MacBook Air which seems to run perfectly fine with the 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD configuration. Via the Apple Refurb Store, they have the Late 2013 13" 4GB/128GB retina MacBook Pro for just $999.00.

Does anyone here actually have this model and are there any concerns with it? Mainly the RAM and driving that retina display. The 128GB storage is plenty for me, though, I have read here that the 256GB SSD is faster in benchmarks. Thanks!

I run FCPX on the Mac in my sig and apart from the slow ass cpu it runs fine. I do a lot of simultaneous tracks and effects in my edits and my memory always stays in the green.

Really 4GB should be fine!

so will the base 128/8GB base model get me by for most surfing, some photoshop and adobe premiere editing?

That Best Buy deal is just too good to pass up.. Don't get me wrong, I am also considering the 256/16GB model but I'm also looking to save the money if I can.

Thank you in advance!

I just ran to my local Best Buy at lunch. Grabbed the movers coupon at the post office on the way to work this morning. $989.99 pre-tax (also used $200 in RZ certs I had). Sweet deal!

Unless the refurb from Apple comes with some free internal upgrade (happened once to me in the past where it had an i7 instead of i5), I think this 8/128 2014 model is the keeper and the refurb will be going back.

Congrats!

My concern is durability with editing 1080P video and some photoshop edits. If anyone has any experience with the base model, you're input would be greatly appreciated!

Very nice. Enjoy! :)
