when apple switched to intel, i remember the macbook pros having lower specs than my powerbook in some areas: slower super drive, low resolution...

Super drives were the same speed, and the 15.2" PowerBook G4 had a resolution of 1440x960, where as the 15.4" MacBook Pro had a resolution of 1440x900. Not really a significant difference (since MBP is a 16:10 display).

MacBook Pro had faster RAM (667MHz vs the 333MHz in the G4) too.

What were the lower specs in the MacBook Pro then..?

The superdrives were not the same speed. They were only capable of 4x writing. maybe you're thinking of 8x dl READING. it also only burned CDs at 24x
My powerbook, on the other hand, can write at 8x. and i believe it can burn cd-rs at 52x

check out the wikipedia page for the mbp's

PowerBook G4 - burns DVD-R's at 8x, and then burns DVD-RW's at 4x as well as CD's at the same speed as the MBP.

Aside from burning DVD-R's (which burning at 8x can be unreliable), what other "lower" specs are you referring to?

that's it. all i'm saying is apple is known to do stuff like this. it makes sense because then on the next refresh when they don't have something as exciting as switching to the unibody design or an intel processer they can say, "hey! we added a firewire port!" or "hey! you get 8x burning!"

and burning at any high speeds on any drive can be unreliable. the specs are still there. that's like saying a porsche isn't faster than a minivan because driving at high speeds is dangerous.

The difference between the PB and MBP superdrives was not the write speeds (although they may be slightly different), it was that they could only burn single layer disks to begin with. Only in later revisions was dual layer burning added back in.
