13" w/2.7 ghz or 15" w/2.9 ghz

Hi All,

I am not a computer expert and that is why I am posting here. My 2009 MacBook Pro is barely holding on and I finally have enough money saved to buy a new computer.

I can not decide on the 13" or 15".

two questions:

Is there that much of a speed difference between the 2.7 and 2.9 ghz?

Will there be that much of a difference in workload/power handling between the two?

I use my computer for music composing/performing (logic, finale, abelton with external hardware controllers) and some video editing.

Could you please help me understand which one is better? I have a bit of a limited budget.

You have a few questions within your post so let me try to break them down to best answer your issue.

- Is there a big difference between 2.7 and 2.9? Well in terms of GHz, clearly not since it’s only .2 GHz difference which you won’t ever see ever. However the bigger difference is in terms of the core count on each of these CPUs. The 13in comes with a quad core i7 which in itself is plenty powerful for what your doing but the 2.9 GHz processor on the 15in is a 6 Core Processor so you get 2 extra cores which can make a big difference for sure.

My personally I would go with the 15in computer just because you also get a discrete GPU but in terms of your workload, the i7 13in will be more than enough.

I can not decide on the 13" or 15".

To me it all boils down to whether you want a larger screen/laptop or a smaller one. The 13" has some advantages of being more portable, and less expensive, but its a smaller screen. Don't think the dGPU will impact your usage, and so the question is, larger or smaller laptop

If you want more horsepower, go with the 15. Better cooling, more cores, discrete graphics option if you think that you need it. If you travel a lot, then the 13 might be the way to go as it's is more portable.

i would agree to that and now I, now am in need of a advice for making a purchase, so the confusion is among these below

1. a MBP 2012 i7 15.4 inch partially broken retina 512 ssd 16gb ram--- 462$
2. a MBP 2012 i7 15.4 inch high res 1650 1080 display 256 ssd 8 gigs ram--- 477$
3. a MBP 2014 i7 15.4 inch retina 8 gigs ram---- 626$
4. a 2015 MBP 13” retina i5 8 gigs 128--- 656$
