Retina Math - How close do you normally hold the iPad?

Yesterday, in Apple's Retina Math Class,
the instructor reminded us the iPhone has more detail at 326ppi
than our retina can resolve when held 10 inches from our eye.

He also taught us the iPad even at a lower 264ppi offers
the same beyond retina resolution when held 15 inches from our eye.

It all sounded wonderful and was supported by graphs and mathematical formulas,
but I'm wondering what distance do you hold the iPad and iPhone from your eyes?

the 15" for ipad 10" for iphone is spot on for me
 
I just measured since I had a ruler handy. When I am sitting, I have my iPad about 14"-15" away from my eyes. When I am laying down, it is about 10" away.

My phone is about 10" the majority of the time.
 
I measured my usual distance with the iPhone and I am usually 12-15" away. I don't know for iPad since I do not have one.
 
Good grief! I can't believe I just got out the tape measure and actually used it. LOL. I hold my iPad a distance of 15 to 16 inches.
 
Well so far it looks like the data supports the claim for most.
My eyes need a little more distance than recommended to focus.

I think Phil made mistake yesterday when he said you could hold the iPad 15" or closer for the retina effect, said closer as well about the iPhone.

As you hold them closer wouldn't you be able to distinguish the pixels easier and lose the effect?

Looking forward to the display, as mentioned above what matters is its 4x more pixels than the current one !
 
yup 10" for iPhone and 15" for iPad for me. I have 20/15 vision though. Those pixels aren't going to escape me. Guess I'll have to wait for a double retina display....

With 20/15 you shouldn't be able to see detail up close as well as someone with 20/20 or worse. So that means you should be able to hold the iPad even closer than 15". I suppose if you say 20/30 I'd believe the pixels wouldn't escape you!
 
My dog prefers to be about 3" away from the screen so her tongue can lick the screen. She thinks the pond app is a water dish :D

15 inches when sitting up, a little less when lying down.

The above was for the iPad. iPhone, 10-12 inches.
 
I was thinking about this too, and if I'm standing I like to have my elbows tucked against my sides for extra stability/support. Assuming I have my head bowed a bit forward I'm at 13 inches (I measured).

It's probably a bit further if I'm sitting or in a more relaxed position.
 
Just checked with a tape measure, what a geek. Haha.

18-20" on average. Closest would be 12" when I'm really trying to focus in on a crappy picture. Probably around 14" when I'm laying in bed and have it propped up when I'm on my stomach.
