I dropped my new iPad 3 from the Apple store :( Now it has 1 dead pixel that is not noticeable and has a tiny ding up top on the black before the silver coating. I am super far from the apple stores but can take a bus ride to NYC when I feel better. I wish I had bought a case or AppleCare but don't have the extra cash. Do you think they will exchange it? Tiny Ding is on black part and not really noticeable.

I'm annoyed a bit because I never ever dropped any of my iPads before. At least I have my receipt

What you mean is you dropped your iPad and dented it and it want it replaced for free, so you searched for a mysterious dead pixel that's so obvious you missed it in all earlier use.

No, the dead pixel was NOT there before. The fall was less than a foot onto the carpet

I can live with it because the dead pixel is not noticeable when watching movies or playing games etc. it just bugs me because I baby my iPad lol. The ding is tiny and also not a big deal. I'm just mad that now my perfect iPad has tiny imperfections. I'm sure they would exchange it if I want the 32GB or a 4G before my 12 days is up. Hope so but if not, I will be fine. I am definitely buying a cover. Less than a foot drop...

jeez, time to drag out the ol' soapbox...
i have no issues with anyone wanting to replace a product if it has a defect out of box, in fact most companies actually have this in consideration in their business plans, but when the consumer causes the defect i.e. drops, dents, scratches, cracks or just plain breaks the product and then expects said company to replace at company cost...one word...fraud, add the cost gets passed to us
very bad form indeed:(

oh and if this is not the plan (free ipad for damaged one) then i apologize in advance

Take it back and say it already had the dead pixel... Dont mention the dent

Theyre getting so many returned they'll never realise

Agree with this totally. if YOU dropped it then YOU are responsible. Not your mommy and daddy. Not Obama. and definitely NOT Apple.

That's like paying $50 for cable tv, not watching it much, and then calling them and complaining how the service sucks and making up this, this and that is wrong and getting a refund.

It's simply fraud. If the STANDARD iPad warranty you have does NOT cover drops, then you are S.O.L. Of course you could be an adult and choose to ignore 1 dead pixel out of 3,100,000+ and a tiny dent that takes nothing away from the functionality of the screen but that may be asking too much of a MacRumors forum thread starter.

Best of luck making a decision to choose your integrity and honesty instead of $500. I know it's hard these days!

I'm 45 years old. No reason to be nasty and condesecending. I wasn't pretending it was there before either. I was told by friends, I could exchange it and decided to post here. :(

I will sell it on CL and tell of dead pixel and ding. I know someone won't care like I do OR I might just keep it. Lesson learned, buy a cover everyone

And this is why our society (specifically American society) is going down the drain.

Thieves and Liars...

But I'm just there will be a follow up post to say how Apple makes $97238946734 a second and so they don't care if someone lies about a defect and steals just one of their new iPads....

This is an honest and very accessible option. I applaud you. You will be a better man if you take the road of honesty and distance yourself from those that want to lie and steal.

Actally i'd be more inclined to say why feel guilty when apple are selling defective ipads to hundreds, if not thousands of people.

My suggestion is to take it to Apple Store and tell them honestly what happened. If you are lucky they will take care of you. Otherwise, you'll have to pay for the swap but it won't be bad $300. ;)

When people start using the word "defective" for a screen they THINK....MIGHT BE.....SLIGHTLY.....WARM, then we have to go back to the dictionary and look up what the word defective actually means.

Apple made an amazing device called the iPad. People just want to complain.

So you think dead pixels on a brand new device is ok?

How about wifi cutting in and out?

I agree. This is the worlds largest company with a certain reputation to uphold, given the premium price they are paid for their products. Also, returning an iPad to them for a replacement isn't going to break their banks. They can absorb these miniature losses without a blimp. I would say to the OP if they were somehow willing to replace it then go for it, but I wouldn't tell them lies that it was already like that or something.

I'm thinking that Since I luckily don't have the tinged screen issue, that I will keep it and spring for the $99 AppleCare warranty with accidental damage. It's a $49.99 deductible but would cover accidental damage. I found another minuscule dead pixel near the bottom when I turned brightness way up in dead pixel test, but not sure if this one was there previously honestly. I can live with it rather than gamble and get a defective one with real bad problems.

I won't use the warranty unless it gets messed up like screen cracking or noticeable dead pixels in the middle of the screen etc. I realize I was being too picky and forgot how blessed I am to even have the new iPad. The screen could have cracked, so I'm good

Yes. Get Applecare + if you can. You can then have it replaced at a later date if you wish. If you can't get Applecare then bring it in for the dead pixels. The genius has an opportunity to inspect it and its up to them to decide whether to replace it. The glass isn't cracked and if its a small ding they'll probably swap it.

Buy car

It's almost like there's a word for that....

I think A dead pixel out of 3,100,000 can easily be tolerated and yes, should be acceptable.

Wifi broken, obviously not since these are internet devices. Plus, I was referring to the bazillion posts we have about "warm screens" where someone thinks it should be one tint of white and it's another tint of white. I wasn't referecing obvious defects. But you can change the conversation to a new topic if you want. Just give a warning :D

The only thing stopping you doing that is the fact that it's illegal to drive w/o insurance. It differs from iDevice cases because Apple actually check the device for damage before they let you purchase the insurance program, whereas a car can be insured at any time without the insurer knowing it's state.

This is an iPad, not a car. The genius may not consider the ding a big deal anyway. I've seen plenty of people at the genius bar with scratched and dinged hardware get warranty coverage. Relax.

Anyway, the genius will inspect the iPad and decide. I'm not saying the OP should lie, only present the device and await the decision silly.

Because they are selling unintentionally defective products, that they replace when it is brought to their attention. That's what a warranty is for.

If you feel you're being ripped off by a company, you don't try to screw them back, you just don't do business with them.

The OP sounds like he is going to do the right thing, but the people who suggest "screw Apple" are just dishonest and are in violation of MacRumors policy against suggesting illegal activities. (Fraud.)
