Because they are selling unintentionally defective products, that they replace when it is brought to their attention. That's what a warranty is for.

If you feel you're being ripped off by a company, you don't try to screw them back, you just don't do business with them.

The OP sounds like he is going to do the right thing, but the people who suggest "screw Apple" are just dishonest and are in violation of MacRumors policy against suggesting illegal activities. (Fraud.)

I am a woman :)

The only thing stopping you doing that is the fact that it's illegal to drive w/o insurance. It differs from iDevice cases because Apple actually check the device for damage before they let you purchase the insurance program, whereas a car can be insured at any time without the insurer knowing it's state.

Inaccurate. I pre-ordered mine and received it on launch day. Called Apple on the phone yesterday and bought Applecare+ for $99. All they require is a serial number and proof of purchase (and they already have the latter if you ordered online from Apple).

There is NO INSPECTION REQUIRED if you are still within 30 days of purchase and buy it over the phone.

I think you should return. One pixel that's dead should be an auto return. For a $500 tablet I would think everyone would like a perfect iPad. I would tell the genius about the dent and just be straightforward.

You are certainly living up to your namesake today. What is illegal about bringing in an iPad with a ding and asking for a replacement for a dead pixel or two? The genius gets to decide whether or not the claim has merit. The ding is there to be seen and will not be (and cannot be) disguised. It is not fraud because nothing is being misrepresented.

You are just upset that you perceive the problem with the OP's iPad to be her fault, but that is not your determination to make. The dead pixels and the ding may not be related and frankly I don't know how they could be unless the glass shattered--which it apparently wasn't.

Just buy a case if it bothes you that much and you won't see it. I use my iPad with no case or skin etc and I got a tiny scratch on the back which you can hardly see and it bothered me for a day and then I forgot about it.

The iPad still functions as its meant to and when do you stare at the back of the iPad anyway?

Let's face it, you dropped it. That is not the fault of Apple. If you have Insurance, then make a claim for accidental damage. If not either sell it and take the loss or just live with it.

Dude just return the damn iPad (within 14 days) just say you don't like the dead pixel/over heating etc... Than repurchased it either there or somewhere else so you have another 14 to togethjernjeukijū

I think A dead pixel out of 3,100,000 can easily be tolerated and yes, should be acceptable.

No, a dead or stuck pixel upon delivery of a new device is NOT acceptable to most consumers or any pro. The only reason anyone thinks that is because a number of manufacturers have recently tried to enforce, for example, an "up to three dead pixel" warranty return policy, creating a mindset that mediocrity is OK.

Most people, after discovering a dead pixel, cannot "unsee" it and their eyes will go right to it...repeatedly. For those with a trained/critical eye, it means immediate return/replacement.

Honestly, I have forgotten about the tiny dead pixels after using apps and playing a few games. The ding doesn't even bother me now. I'm in love again with my iPad 3 again lol

I will buy AppleCare+ over the phone for sure and I will buy a good sturdy case

Nothing illegal about presenting it to them to see if they want to replace it.

Now telling them explicitly that you DIDN'T drop it, and that it had the fault from the time it was bought, would constitute fraud.

I have no problem with bringing it to them and letting them decide. But in the process, you should not lie about dropping it. (Yes, omission is a form of lying.) It is not the OP suggesting taking it in to see if she can get it replaced that I object to - she seems perfectly willing to own up to the drop - it is the other commenters suggesting that it is somehow acceptable to lie to Apple about the drop that I object to.

I'm not trying to be offensive or rude but in my opinion people need to take responsibility for their mistakes, it's not Apple's fault you dropped it.

Further, I think its a pretty shady way to go to CL and try to sell it there unless you are going to cut the price and be up front with the customer. I absolutely hate it when people try to screw others with products that they claim is in perfect condition when its really not.

From the Thread Starter:

"I will sell it on CL and tell of dead pixel and ding. I know someone won't care like I do OR I might just keep it. Lesson learned, buy a cover everyone"

No one is trying to screw someone here.

Was just making an outside comment, not necessarily referring directly to the OP but people do that crap and it pisses me off. Its the main reason why I don't deal with sites like CL or eBay because you don't know what you are going to get.

Completely agree. I hate seeing a great pic on eBay and receiving a below par product.

Contemplating returning the iPad to the Apple Store & having Apple take the hit because YOU dropped it is wrong!

Sure, you might get away with it. But, people doing things like this results in higher prices. Suck it up. You made a mistake. Apple shouldn't be made to pay for it.

Actally i'd be more inclined to say why feel guilty when apple are selling defective ipads to hundreds, if not thousands of people.

And you believe apple is intentionally doing so? BTW, my ipad3/64GB/4G has a perfect screen, and none of the other issues mentioned in the blogs.
