I'm new to firewire. I want to get a FW400/800 drive for use with my macbook and iMac. Now, since the iMac has ONE FW800 port, and most HDs have two ports -- can I chain them together to connect multiple hard drives?

Sure does. It will be limited by the slowest firewire in your chain though, so if you have fw400 and fw800 drives in the same chain, they will all be at fw400 speed.
