Will I see a big improvement if I upgrade a M1 to M4? I know I’d see upgrades with video processing etc, but what about for normal day to day use? Much better battery life?

I found the M4 Max for $2500 open box on Amazon. I’m thinking I could sell the M1 Max for $1200-1500?

Should I finally upgrade or HODL?

Yes
M1 Max, M2 Max, M4 Max compared - how high-end Apple Silicon has evolved
The M4 Max boasts nearly double the multi-core performance of the M1 Max and a significant 60% increase over the M2 Max, marking the biggest generational leap in Apple's high-end Mac chips.

I think your price will be closer to 1,000 then it is to 1,500. Higher spec'd macs do not hold the same value as base models because there's limited demand.

Refurbs are closer to 1,500, if apple is selling them, but they carry a warrenty and are backed by apple, so they can charge more.

Should I finally upgrade or HODL?
Only you can make that decision, but you're in a bad spot in a sense with the M5 Max being released in a few months.
Food for thought:
  • Current 16" M4 Max MBPs with 64GB of ram, 1TB storage, 14/32 cpu/gpu cores is 4500 dollars. Is this laptop "renewed" or open box?
  • What about a Mac Studio, you almost surely can get a brand new studio for what you can get that open box one from amazon
  • Waiting for the M5? Will you have buyers remorse once the M5 Pro comes out?

Thanks for the detailed response.

I had an offer for $1250 for my M1 Max. It seems like people value those larger hard drives and are willing to pay for the convenience.

I'm not too worried about the M5 Max, as I would prefer to not pay full price and would be willing to wait for refurbished units down the road.

I love the Mac Studio. I'd definitely consider one if I could find a good deal.

With current MBP's in this configuration around $4500, I think this one I got for $2500 is a great deal. It was open box, but only has 2 cycles on the battery. Looks brand new. I just wish it was silver, but that one was $700 more.

Seems like I'm getting about 2x faster single core, and about 2x faster multicore. Pretty significant bumps.

My dream would be a MacBook Air with 120hz OLED, with 1000nits along with faster memory and hard drive speeds. For that I'd definitely prefer the size of the mba. I just don't think I'd be willing to downgrade from the M1 Max in a lot of specs for MBA.

I'm going to search out Mac Studio deals to see if there is anything cheaper. Thanks!

It's about $700 more for the MacBook than the studio m4 max deals I can find with only 512gb. So I'd definitely need some external storage solutions. It is tempting for sure.
