I'm using macOS dark mode. It only crashes on Chrome for me which could either be cuz Safari doesn't support 8K HDR on YT or cuz I couldn't scroll when playing the video full screen.
Got it, thanks. Earlier someone suggested that using YT dark mode prevents crashes, so I was curious about your settings. I've been testing it myself the past few days. After approximately 20 attempts, I was finally able to get a crash using YT dark mode, so it seems that's not a fix. This is with Safari watching the Costa Rica video posted earlier (4K HDR, 60fps)

I don’t have any crashing on Compact tabs. Do you prefer separate tabs?

Honestly, I have not developed a preference yet and like both views. For the sake of testing, I'm using different modes on different days. After discovering that compact view seemed to be a fix, I was unfortunately able to produce a single crash several days later. In other words, it's not foolproof. I've since been unable to elicit another crash under these conditions despite many attempts, which I cannot say for the other solutions suggested. It remains the best solution for me, although it's not perfect and obviously does not help people who prefer to use other browsers.

Funny enough after the crash Safari doesn’t open any external links for me. Like if I click on any external links posted here, like that YT link, it just opens a new tab but stays blank. Only solved with a reboot.

I don't know if there has been a YouTube update today - but I am not getting any crashing on separate tabs. Anyone else?

*This is because the HDR option is not on YouTube today.

Just had this happen myself twice in a row, probably repeatable.

Running 16" on M1 Max.

Managed to force Rec.2020 in Chrome with AV1, but then crashed whilst watching content, and then with the content on another tab whilst reading this forum.

Spoke to Apple support chat who weren't very helpful, 30mins to be referred to a phone call with a 'Senior Advisor'.

Will update when I hear back from them tomorrow

this issue is suppose to be resolved once 12.1 is out. Hopefully in the coming days

Cheers Gyro, it seems these forums know more than Apple support do!

Interestingly, Safari can play HDR fine on Netflix currently (Shift+Ctrl+Opt+D when viewing to confirm), yet Chrome doesn't seem to be able to.

It's kinda usual I guess that on apple u need safari to play Netflix on HDR and HD resolutions. Weird. I know I think it's because of the DRM thingy or something

I've had a number of kernel panics on my new MBP 14" in the last couple weeks, particularly when using Airpods Pro with multiple Apple devices at once (14" MBP, iPad Pro, and iPhone 13), and with Zoom on multiple devices simultaneously.

When it happened earlier today, it was an endless reboot sequence on my MBP (probably 6 or 7 times in a row) until I closed Zoom and turned off the Airpods.

The only other apps I had running were Safari and Citrix viewer.

I haven't seen anyone else report this type of thing here yet. What version of macOS are you running?
