Alright everyone, the release of the new MacBook Pros is imminent. Assuming that all other factors are equal (storage, RAM, GPU, etc), which size would you prefer and why?

I was all about the 16", but during the pandemic, worked so much from home closed clamshell into an external monitor. With 90%+ of my usage like that, the bigger screen will be less valuable to me. Whereas the portability of the 14" (I currently have a 13" 2016 MBP which is a dream to carry around) will be great, and a cheaper price to boot.

Now, rumors do point to while having the same CPU, the GPU on the 16" will likely have more cores (both default and upgradeable) than in the 14". For me, given I do barely any gaming / very little graphic-intensive use, it's essentially a wash. So I'm now leaning 14" - but will make final decision after watching Mon's event!

14” of course, anyone who has carried the 16” model knows it’s unwieldy. If I need battery life, I’ve got my 30,000 mAh power bank.

If I were ordering I'd choose the 14"because it's easier to carry around....
....but I'm happy with my 2016 15" MBP and the Touch Bar......don't want to lose that, I love it! :)

Currently have a 2020 MacBook Air 13" and planning to upgrade to the 14" model. I like the size for portability, weight and the screen is big enough for my daily usage.

I've gone back and forth between 13 and 15 in the past, currently on m1 MacBook Air. Given I need way more power, RAM and screen real estate to do work, photo and audio stuff, I'm going to opt for the 16 inch as close to maxed specs as I can afford. I think the 14 will be great as well, but I'm finding 13 too restrictive now so want to notice a big jump with an upgrade.

If specs are the same (CPU/GPU cores, screen etc) then there is no reason to go for the 16" unless you use it out and about not able to connect to external monitor and need the extra 2 inches. I predict the 14" will greatly outsell the 16" , not just because it will be priced lower.

the 16" will be the one to get the 32 gpu cores and maybe the 64gb of ram...the 14" is a smaller enclosure for that big SoC

Was thinking 16 to replace my 13 personal. But I have a new 16 for work and it’s big! Decided to wait, see the full specs and determine from there. Right now kinda feel like I’m leaning towards 14. 🤷‍♂️

I have had a 15.6" laptop that weighs 2.5kg for the past 8 years and I feel really comfortable carrying around. How different an extra 0.4" would make (and 0.5 less kg)?

I'm definitely ordering the newly announced MacBook Pro M1X after the Unleashed event.

Other than screen resolution what other advantages are there in going with the 16" version versus the 14"

Planning 64GB memory and at least 1TB SSD (have a Sabrent 2TB SSD I can use).

Thanks for any advice. Kind of like the Series 7 pre-order no specifics from Apple until after the presentation. Figuring within the first hour most will slip well into November.

Any advantages would be purely speculation at this point. We all need to wait for Monday to learn more. You can bet their marketing team has done the work of telling the differences.

I just wonder why Apple waits till the specific event to announce the varying configurations - then orders commence afterward. I like knowing in advance what my requirements for my order might be. Appreciate your sentiments.

This.

There are a lot of conflicting rumors regarding price and specs and the “leakers” have been very… off this year. We don’t even know if M1X will be the name (remember when we all thought the M1 would be A14X… right up until the event?) nor do we know if the GPU core counts are accurate.

That being said, if the rumors about the M1X are true then the 16 core GPU and the 32 core GPU are 2 separate M1X versions (Jade C Chop and Jade C Die). This seems to be a “fact” people forget about with most thinking the 16 core is a binned 32 core. With that in mind: We know Apple uses “chip binning” to increase manufacturing yields and they will most likely continue doing this for BOTH M1X versions. We also know only a small fraction of Macs sold are customized (majority sold online and especially at retail are base models) which means Apple would be producing a whole separate M1X version for a small fraction of customers. We also know the 16” (and 15” before) has been treated as a separate product from the 13” MacBook Pro (the 16” is listed separately on the Apple website not just a “larger” MacBook Pro) and has always had a graphical advantage due to its better thermal headroom, bigger battery and more pixels to push.

For the reasons above (and I could be completely wrong) I do believe there will be a difference between the base model 14” and 16” in GPU performance. I see the base model 14” coming with a binned 12 (or 14) core GPU (M1X Jade C Chop) and the base 16” coming with a binned 24 core GPU (M1X Jade C Die).

For some reason I expect both the 14” and 16” MBP redesigns will be a lot lighter as you don’t need to deal with the usual Intel + discrete GPU heat issues with Apple Silicon SoC as much. I think some are in for a shock.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. The M1 13” MBP weighs merely 0.1 lbs less than the Intel version due to less heat sink material.
