For those of you with a 14inch M1 Max MBP and 5K UltraFine display, do the fans turn on with normal usage? Also, what temps do you get on average? I'm currently using a 16inch M1 Pro MBP with a 5K UltraFine display and temps average around 50 degrees C and the fans do not turn on. I have a 14inch M1 Max MBP coming in the mail one day but don't know which one to choose. Thanks in advance!

I have a 14 inch Max with the LG 4K Ultrafine and have not yet heard the fans once.

I have a 14 inch M1 Pro with LG 5k ultrafine (going through a CalDigit dock) and I have never heard the fans come on…

Just an additional data point, but running a 14inch M1 Max with the LG 5K Ultrafine leads to the fan coming on around 2500rpm (very barely audible - only audible putting your ear right up to the keyboard) once in a while. This is under normal/light use with some YouTube streaming. The fan mostly stays off. It seems like the chassis is not completely able to handle the M1 Max powering the 5k display completely fanless all the time. Meanwhile, the 16inch M1 Pro can handle the 5k fanless without any issue.

I can concur I have the 16” M1 Max and have never had the fans kick on (0rpm reported by iStats). 43-50C CPU temps while connected to the LG 5K display.

Been watching this thread for a while but could not confirm as my iStat Menus was not updated. I can now confirm that the fans stay off with one LG 5K display plugged in, not charging and in idle (except with some webpages, Outlook etc. open). My ambient temperature is around 26 deg C.

[Edit] Oops, the fans just came on. They run at below 2,500rpm though, which is hardly noticeable. I guess the fans may stay off if your ambient temperature is lower.

That’s very interesting. My 16” M1 Max never ramps the fans up at any time connected to my 5K display. What temps do you see when the fan does ramp up? Mine sits in the low 40s-50s doing web browsing, movie watching etc.

My ambient is about 22C, mind.

The fans seem to ramp up when the CPU temp rises to 50C. Later in the evening I observed an episode where the CPU temp rose quickly and the fans ramped up at 65C to about 2,500rpm. That seems effective in keeping the CPU temp at about 60C with ambient temperature of around 24-25C.

I find that the fans shut off until about 60 to 65C, then it ramps up to 2500rpm, which brings down the temp to about 50C after which the fans shut off again. My ambient temp is around 20C.

Yeah that's way different on the 16". I didn't see fans ramp up till the 80s C, and then they shut off as soon as the system got into the 60s again. Even then, the fans were so quiet at ~1550rpm, you'd have to have your ear next to it to hear. I was keeping an eye in iStat Menus.

Under my everyday browser/video-watching use, my 16" M1 Max never, ever spins its fans up connected to the 5K display.

Yah totally agree. I decided to keep a 16inch M1 Pro, which under the same conditions (where the 14inch fans would turn on) amazingly stays constant at 43-45C without the fan turning on while connected to a 5k UltraFine display.

It sounds like the physical volume of 16" acts like a heat sink to 'soak up' and dissipate the heat. Since the 14" has less volume, the heat does build up more quickly.
