i also have this thump noise when i go to watch a dvd didn't happen until i updated to 10.4.10 either

I had the same 'thump' just before a sound played, but only when my MacBook was running on battery, and only after a period of inactivity. Now after 10.4.10 the 'thump' occurs even when my Mac is plugged into the power. It's really irritating!
Seems that the audio system goes to sleep after a period of time, and can be woken up by any sound event. Makes sense to shut down the sound subsystem to save battery power, but it's useless when you're plugged in to an outlet.

You know, after the update I"m also noticing transferring files via bluetooth to my treo takes twice as long as it goes half the speed....what gives?
Same problem here + general static/hissing.

I have found a way to get rid of that popping sound in your speakers.
1. Obtain a copy of "AppleHDA.kext" from a 10.4.9 Intel installation, or use Pacifist to extract it from a 10.4.9 upgrade package. This is the High Definition Audio extension file.
2. You will need to download the .dmg file and open it to extract the .pkg file to the desktop and run Pacifist against it to extract the file. The file is in the same place as it is on the machines.
3. "/System/Library/Extensions/" is where AppleHDA.kext lives in the .pkg and on the computers.
4. Go to /System/Library/Extensions and delete the AppleHDA.kext file from your 10.4.10 installation.
5. Copy the newly obtained AppleHDA.kext into /System/Library Extensions on your affected computer.
6. Open the Terminal and type: sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions to rebuild the kext cache.
7. You may be asked for your admin password to do this.
8. Reboot the machine and the popping sound will be history.
