No, at idle they should be the same. There are some claims that Vega may actually be cooler (as in consume less energy) at some tasks, like driving an external monitor that Apple hardwired to it and forces its use. Vega will be hotter/louder at full load.

I did a a 2 min CPU stress test of the i9 with Vega 20 enabled (Connected to the Ultrafine 5K Display). It remains stable at 3.30 ghz.
I guess they solved the issues seen on the 560x.

Hey guys just one last question, would i7 vega 20 vs i9 vega 20 be significantly different? Debating whether it's worth throwing extra $$ for i7 -> i9 upgrade

And that was on external monitor? Nice! Stable 45W on cores, that's pretty impressive. They did kick the fans up a notch compared to RX. Could you have a look at iStatMenu (if you have it) and check what is the power consumption on Radeon while the machine is idle and just connected to external monitor?

For vast majority it is not worth it. If you need burst load or max single core performance then yes. I'd say if don't know if you need it then you don't need it.

Yes it's very impressive. Unfortunately I don't have istats but I can tell you that the temps when the monitor is connected are around 10 degrees Celsius higher in idle. Here an example as I also posted on my recent thread:

idle without 5K

I like the fact that it's very silent, it maintains the fans at the minimum even with the 5K connected. (On my 2016 model they were spinning at 3500-4000 rpm in idle.)

7C difference, so probably only 3W more. I don't remember how it was exactly on RX, but it was annoying enough to make me buy eGPU. Now that alone would be an argument to go with Vega even if you don't do anything that requires additional GPU power. Apple really should just include Vega in base versions with paid upgrade to a faster one.
