I wouldn't be surprised if Apple were expecting poor sales. I don't think most people understand what advantage an AR/VR headset can bring to their lives.
It all comes down to how much it’s going to cost to the consumers. The biggest advantage AR/VR headsets can bring in is for “Gaming” besides that what else is there?

Memoji's?

It was never likely in the first place. Just like the iPhone 12 mini, if there was enough market demand for small displays, Android manufacturers would already be on it.
Part of the problem with small devices is that they can’t really charge more for them (how people relate size to cost in general) but if they only have larger sizes then they can make more money. As we have seen with the 14 plus, more people bought the 13 mini than the 14 plus so it’s not just about sizes. I would be interested to know if apple has made as much money with 14 plus vs 13 mini when accounting for volume.

If it’s gonna be 15 inch, then it can't be classified as an Air. 15.5 is a large device and the idea of the Air was due to its lightness and easy to carry around. This to me sounds like either a successor to the 13.3 MacBook Pro with touch bar or possibly a new category, MacBook Studio perhaps? But Air doesn't sound like it. Even the new MacBook Air doesn't feel like an Air, Apple really should have just called it "MacBook" and still keep the tear drop design as a category itself that's updated with the latest Apple silicon.
Air means thin / light. 15” laptops can be thin & light.

The person who approved the black area on the top of the display where the camera is (whatever that is called) on iPhones and MacBooks should never be allowed to design again. It's still butt ugly today and always will be.

I haven't been following the rumours closely, but I'm excited about the AR part, where you could look at a piece of art in an art gallery, and it would show you the Wikipedia article on your headset. That would be pretty damn cool.

12" is too small for 99.9% of laptop buyers. This is a too niche market for Apple to consider launching any 12" laptop.

Especially these days were 11" is completely archaic and more and more people (consumers and laptop manufacturers) jump on the 14-15" wagon instead of 13". Thanks to smaller bezels almost any 15" fit easily in a backpack which was not a given 5-10 years ago

This will be a great device, just wish the colors matched the M1 iMac!

I bought a 16" MBP purely for the size -- although I do enjoy the screen and speakers, but would've preferred a lighter device.

Oddly enough, I went from having the largest Apple devices to now the smallest with the exception of the MacBook. If there was a 12", I would get that lol my reasoning is off.

13" MBP --> 16" MBP
Plus iPhones --> 13 mini
12.9 iPad Pro --> iPad mini
27" iMac --> 24" iMac
What would I not give for a yellow mba ! Colorful and joyful macs , come to me !

There is someone I know who wants to upgrade to a Mac but really needs to keep there bigger screen size (and absolutely does not need a pro). I have been waiting for this so badly so I can recommend it to them. I pray it actually happens

People forget that outside of Intel the biggest problem with the 12 inch MacBook was the price.
It was $1299.

mmmmm yeah sowhat?

It did cost so much because it "bleeding edge" AND Apple decided it could do big margins on it.

Today everything has a Retina display and modern touchpad and the engineering to make a M1/2/3 MBA work in in slightly smaller case is minimal.

No idea how you came to that conclusion. Data shows 14 Plus already exceeds 13 mini adoption compared to this same period last year.

Even if sales were the same, Apple would earn more revenue selling higher ASP Plus models.

I love this “information overlay” application. Works in a bunch of areas, too!

Despite that, I think it’s very far from mainstream success/acceptance.
Not even gamers could be swayed to get into VR/AR en masse and that’s a market that’s usually happy to pay for all sorts of gimmicks.
And with the prices we’re (mostly) still seeing, I think it’ll take a good while until we see wider acceptance.

I don't think there are many people out there that are excited about Apple’s AR/VR headset. Unless Apple surprises us with ground breaking new technology. It’s a very niche product.
If any company can make a nascent / niche product mainstream, it's apple. Its success will largely depend on its price and (like you said) whether it breaks new ground in the space. AR / VR has a future, it's just a matter of how long will it take.

I'm excited to see what apple comes up with, but I'm very afraid of the rumored price.

Apple should save a 12", notch-less, 120hz dispaly for an iPad Pro/macPad with a dust-proof Keyboard, running macOS with a touch layer.

Ok, I hope you will be able to fit in a standard manilla envelope. Thats the point Steve Jobs was making with the 13 inch in 2008. It was a category by itself. Yes, there was the conventional 15 and 13 in models for those who needed something that was powerful and compromise but necessarily geared towards mobility. This 15.5 inch I believe is just a much cheaper option than the thicker models. Especially if its carrying the option of a Pro Apple SoC.

That’s my concern about a 15 inch air.
I want that device but I am long past the basic old 60 Hz screens anymore

Apple needs to upgrade the screen game across all the line up and not just on high end..
It’s time.

I don't even need the +60hz stuff, I don't play fast FPS games on my laptop and that's about the only time it'd be meaningful for me. When it comes to a laptop I just stick to mostly work and battery life is a must, so if anything 1-60hz flexing would be much more useful for me...and the black levels for editing/movie consumption/etc.

It’s also about the weight. All MacBook Air are under 3 lbs. It won’t be possible to make a MacBook “Air” 15 unless Apple uses mag alloy or carbon fiber and cuts the battery size.

In all likelihood, this 15 wont be an Air. Perhaps an XR.
