15-Inch MacBook Pro With Touch Bar Has Non-Removable SSD

I can't believe people are sending me PM's full of expletives and calling me names for pointing out that it's cheaper and easier to let Apple fix a broken ssd.

People are no longer able to accept probable facts.

I'm sure they were all just waiting to click the "order" button. Just waiting to go and purchase the MBPro as long as it has removable SSD. And now that it's been brutally taken away from them they're understandably frustrated.

I'm sure none of them are trolling. No, really.

Why the outrage? $2400+ bucks, what do you expect at that bare bones price? Sheesh. So what if 256GB is the entry level storage -- same as the 2012 model -- and can't ever be upgraded. Don't you know on-board storage is soooo old fashion? I know this for a fact because Phil Schiller told me that iCloud Drive was the future along with collecting limited edition dongles.

Easy solution here -- just spend another $240/yr and get a 2TB iCloud drive that may or may not work when you need it most. Look you are spending $2400 on a laptop. Surely you have another $240 to spend on additional cloud storage after you finish spending $100-200 additional on dongles and adapters and a new pouch to store them all.

And who upgrades their MBP storage anyway to extend it's life? Don't you know it's a public humiliation to be walking around with a 2 year old Apple device? In some countries court's sentence convicted people to sit in the town square coffee shops like this as punishment. C'mon get with the times. This is the TC era where Apple cares so deeply about the environment it looks to recycle its junk in just year or two when you buy the newest unupgradable model with last year's specs.

OK, yes, extreme sarcasm because yes, this is really petty of Apple whether you look to upgrade your SSD or not. /S.

The only potential issue I see here is some kind of failure and lack of easy diagnostics. Some of you are acting like you fill up your main SSD with downloaded movies and then discard and replace it when it's full. What the hell? If you're a 'Pro' then you always have important information backed up at multiple locations anyway. I imagine Apple tried to minimise possibility of failures by using higher quality, more expensive components. These fixes for fixes have resulted in the machine being as expensive as it is.

Also, if you watched the keynote, the part where Schiller talked about the SSD, you can clearly see it's soldered on. It's just that nobody realised. Even me. Until now.

Oh and another thing, buy the capacity you think you'll need now. The machine overall will be replaced before your chosen capacity becomes too small.

These SSDs use custom proprietary Apple controllers, you couldn't even find a compatible replacement for this machine were it detachable. So what are you all complaining about?

You are forgetting that most people have years of files and thousands of $'s of OXS applications that tie them into Apple
eco-system. There is no other manufacturer to sell them a different product that would meet their needs. Moving to another OS is a hassle and a significant cost. This is not bitterness, these are legitimate complaints from consumers that do not have a choice. If you are a monopolist, at least provide people with the absolute best. Apple is no longer doing it.

Not to mention, many of us just *LIKE* MacOS and want to keep using it. I despise Windows, and desktop Linux lacks things I need.

I dont see anyone complaining about non removable storage in iphone or ipad...

...because they've been like that since day 1 and those of us who didn't like it bought Androids with SD slots instead. Anyway, there's a good reason to make hand-held devices thinner and lighter. Macs got thin & light enough years ago.

My 17" MBP has lasted twice as long as it would have, because I was able to upgrade the hard drive and RAM. Which, of course, is the real reason why Apple is doing this.

The new MacBook Pro(s) are throwaway computers.

Is your SSD full and do you want to upgrade? Tough luck: you can't upgrade with a bigger SSD.

Do you want expand the storage with expansion drives? Tough luck because new MacBook Pro doesn't have SD slot either.

Did you have your data on the SSD when the logic board failed? Tough luck because you are not getting that data back.

Yeah, your SSD is full : the obvious solution is to throw your MacBook Pro away.

If only some for of crazy external storage existed... if only ...

Yes you should backup your data... and have three sets on three different media. But that does not excuse Apple from this particular move.

I don't like the move to proprietary and non-user serviceable components as well, but I'm not going to complain about a hypothetical situation where a laptop dies and you lose data because of such a design decision. That was my only point.

Hey guys, I know this sucks, and it does... But Apple probably wouldn't be able to get higher speeds over 2,000 MBps speeds if you had a separate SSD module... So its speed over userbility there. We know what Apple choose.

Nope.

The speed depends on the drive itself and the bus speed, not how the drive is attached to the motherboard. There are plenty of laptops out there with PCI-E x4 lanes and removable M.2 SSDs.

For example the Dell XPS 15 which can go up to 2400MB/s read speeds with the appropriate (replaceable) drive. You can also replace the RAM btw. And the Wifi card. And the battery.

I really do not like the direction Apple is heading. I think Apple is becoming a company merely for money making and political agenda pushing, plus some emojis. We need get rid of TIM and make apple great again.

You give a company, one that produces tech products/gagets no less, the power to make you angry? That is really unhealthy.

Thinking your action-less complaints will cause Apple to change direction is precious!

If you want Apple to listen to you and change direction the solution is simple. Open your wallet and purchase a competing product. There are loads out there. Stand up and do it. Make a statement that will be heard.

Ha! Thanks for the health advice, but dont worry doc, I'll be just fine!

Yet another daily reminder that I am so happy I got my 2015 15" 3 months ago on sale at Best Buy. Does everything I want and fast as heck. So glad I didn't wait for this disaster.

Just be grateful it has an SSD at all. Soon everything will be in the cloud and hard drives and SSDs will be a thing of the past. Storing your own data? HA! Apple will soon control all data and you will pay monthly by gigabyte. It’s all over folks.

I don't like the move to proprietary and non-user serviceable components as well, but I'm not going to complain about a hypothetical situation where a laptop dies and you lose data because of such a design decision. That was my only point.
Fair enough. You do bring up another issue with the soldered on HD. Normally if an MB fails, you can just disconnect the drive and rescue the data. Not so with this configuration.

What is really sad is the empty (wasted) space around the battery modules...

I guess so next realease they can uslessly shrink it even more and say: "See! Same battery life in a smaller enclosure"

External storage might not be practical or desirable.

Perfect compliment to all those dongles. Make's it look like a Christmas Tree, or maybe a Hanukah menorah. Heh. I do love how people are suggesting these work arounds like the MBP is a netbook when it's billed as a premium laptop. Maybe they don't understand the concept of a laptop and that it's big selling point is portability while still being useful, not a dumb terminal.

Prices for large SSDs and logic boards are similar, so while the part getting replaced is different, the result for the user is the same as ever: backup. get AppleCare.

Yeah good idea. Pay extra on top of a price increase on top of an already overpriced machine. /s

If Apple stood by the quality of their products they would give 3 years of warranty by default in their pro machines. As it is, given that Apple is offering consumer / prosumer products and service, the value of those machines is pretty bad since you can't upgrade or replace any part, just like the 2013 Mac Pro.

If you think Macbooks don't fail you haven't been with Apple long enough.

Last time I had a disk failure I ran over to the local parts monger, picked up a new disk. Swapped it over myself at home while having some coffee. I installed the OS and Xcode. Everything of importance I have redundant backups of.
4 hours later I was back working as if nothing had happened.
That means more to me than a couple of mm thinner laptop.

Can't upgrade the RAM... Can't upgrade the SSD... this is a "pro" laptop?

Speak with your wallets, folks. There are much better products out there and without that silly, stupid touch bar.

In its ridiculous quest for thinness Apple is throwing out everything that is useful and important to professional users.

Way to go Phil Schiller! Because you and Apple don't make enough profit, let's just strip away everything that made our laptops expandable so you and the executive team can make more millions.
