Because like with most loud, screaming children, a colorful piece of plastic and rubber shuts them up.

If that were true, there would not have been a class action lawsuit. Some 25 million people were not satisfied with a "colorful piece of plastic and rubber".

I felt just fine receiving my free Bumper.

The $15 is not the most pathetic part, the way Apple initially completely refused to admit the problem, then gave away free bumpers for a problem that did not exist and now settling with $15... yeah the whole thing was pathetic. Had the issue still existed in the 4S I would be like pfffft people are overacting over nothing, but given its been fixed with a redesign, really why redesign something that is working as intended.

People were having problems with attenuation, but it was in situations where other phones wouldn't have reception. In other words, it was operating in spec, but sometimes it would greatly exceed specifications. It doesn't hurt to make offer something that will improve your customers experience if it is easy to do. They have certainly improved upon the antenna though. Apple is now way ahead of other phones in their antenna performance.

I believe the redesign actually added a second antenna. If the first antenna wasn't getting a good signal, it switches to the second. That really is a new feature and not a design problem with the old antenna.

Apple claims that the iPhone 4 reception problem doesn't exist. They say that the "dramatic drop in [signal] bars" is explained by an erroneous signal display.

Really?
I haven't seen any published data that shows signal strength/attenuation measurements between the iPhone and other smart phones.

So... what's that good for? $15 for gloves so you can hold it right? This litigation is curious.

There. Fixed that for you.

Basically, there are still millions of iPhone 4 users out there who really never had any real problem.

Was it a flaw? Sure. Was it really all that big of a deal? Not really.

All iPhone 4's are built exactly the same way. it is impossible that millions never had this issue.

When I first got my iPhone 4, I attributed the sudden multiple drop calls to a number of things. It wasn't until I switched back to my 3GS that I realized that it was the handset.

The main issue here is the same as with the 80% screen failures of the eMac, the exploding batteries of the PowerBook 2006 and, well, major problems with pretty much EVERY Apple product since they cut QA and manufacturing cost in the early 2000's : they produce crap. I know this is painful for fanboys to admit, but while the design and ideas are fantastic, the production quality is every bit as shoddy as on a Dell.

Given the requirements to collect on this, I'd say it's a huge win for Apple.

How is this a win for Apple if you claim the antenna thing wasn't a big issue but they still have to pay up anyways? Sure, each person may only get $15, but when you take into account what the lawyers are likely getting paid and how many people would go collect that $15, it adds up.

Personally, I'd label "a win" as not having to fork over anything. Could be just me.

Look at these numbers. It doesn't make sense.

The iPhone is approx. $600 without contract. In theory, an iPhone is a PHONE, so the primary use of a PHONE is making phone calls. The problem, supposedly, is the PHONE dropping calls because of signal problems. This seems like a big issue, right? *

$15 is only 2.5% of the cost of the phone!!!! That's a SMALL amount.

I guess if the brakes occasionally don't work on my car, I can expect a class action lawsuit for about $500. (2.5% of $20,000 is $500).

Yep - everything seems right in the world.

* - we all know this really isn't a big issue - it's all bogus, which of course, is why the settlement is so low

Then I should get money back on my old LG flip phone too since cupping it in my hand caused far more of a problem than I have with my iPhone. My LG dropped AT&T calls all the time. I haven't had a single dropped call on my AT&T iPhone. This class action doesn't make logical sense, unless you're a lawyer.

Lawyers make millions...people get 15 bucks...class action lawsuits are so pointless.

I love the way you to distinguish between "lawyers" and "people" -- well done. :)

Then why did apple give out free covers and settle the case? It seems obvious that a lot of ppl were affected by this flaw.

Because the media made a stink about it. The number of dropped calls on iPhone 4 was comparable to iPhone 3GS and some even reported less. Certainly the return rates for iPhone 4 were far less than iPhone 3GS.

If that were true, there would not have been a class action lawsuit. Some 25 million people were not satisfied with a "colorful piece of plastic and rubber".

See above. There was a class action lawsuit because lawyers want to make money and they can convince almost anybody to sign on because dumb people think they might get a significant amount of money from this.

Your opening sentence shows that the rest of your post should be ignored. The very nature of how the supposed effect was caused by contact with the person's hand and the level conductivity of that person's body directly impacts the possibility of attenuating any smartphone. Every person has different chemistry and physical makeup -- this was documented when the supposed issue was widespread in the media -- don't know how you missed that? Maybe you were too busy being an anti-fan.

I'm not even sure you own an iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS -- after all, you claim Apple has produced crap since the early 2000's. Why on earth would you buy Apple's crap products?

I personally tested my 3GS against the iPhone 4 owned by my brother and another iPhone 4 owned by a friend and both of them maintained call quality and signal better than my 3GS. The iPhone 4 was far more sensitive and able to maintain a call with low signal compared to iPhone 3GS. Further you can see the link above that shows more people complained about dropped calls with iPhone 3GS than iPhone 4. Finally, I asked most folks I knew who had iPhone 4's if I could try to attenuate their antennas with a death grip and was never able to produce any difference between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Maybe my body chemistry does not lend itself to the issue as much as others, but I don't know a single person that I've talked face-to-face who has complained about their iPhone 4 having a problem. The only people I see complaining are faceless posters on forums like this.

I know this is painful for you Apple haters, but most people think that Apple products are top-notch and it has propelled Apple to being the best tech company and most valuable company in the USA.

What about

What about all those other smartphones that have the same so called problem? We should collect from those tools also. :p

I felt just fine receiving my free Bumper.

The $15 is not the most pathetic part, the way Apple initially completely refused to admit the problem,

They didn't admit anything because there was no problem. Even the original Consumer Reports article said 'in areas with poor cell service'.

then gave away free bumpers for a problem that did not exist and now settling with $15...

Placebo. It was more polite than telling them they are morons that need to **** and it kept them out of court where just getting cases tossed is costly.

but given its been fixed with a redesign, really why redesign something that is working as intended.

The redesign was about the whole 'world phone' issue, not about fixing any problems.

----------

Apple put up such a stick when I called and requested a bumper.

Well if you didn't follow the rules, of course they did.

Even last time there was a very specific way to request your bumper. People couldn't just walk into a store and yell about getting their free stuff.

So in a way has admitted to the well known problem of the antenna. I for one was victim of it many times. Apple should be offering those with iP4 a trade in for a working iP4s and not getting of lightly with a slap in the face 15 buck refund. THE PHONE FAILS TO WORK EFFECTIVELY. Money talks I guess

It seems a bit humorous that the award is $15 -- if you didn't accept Apple's offer of a free case or bumper. Let's see: the bumper is $29; a case runs about that amount. So if you didn't accept Apple's original offer, you now can settle for half the amount it was worth. What a bizarre settlement!

Lawyers got the other 50%? On the other hand, maybe the cost to Apple for creation and delivery of bumpers was only $15, so it's not perceived value but cost. Either way I find the whole thing silly.

I did follow the rules. I did all of the troubleshooting and the whole 9 yards. After there still was not a fix to my problem, Apple gave me a hard time about requesting a new bumper to alleviate my signal issue until I brought up the article that stated their policy.

I didn't just go into an Apple store and "demand free stuff"

Not enough

Because like with most loud, screaming children, a colorful piece of plastic and rubber shuts them up.

LOL.

Apple should supply a rubberized case to the unhappy iPhone owners with a pacifier extension they can chew and suck on.

Personally I would not accept the settlement. I would take my iPhone down to the local Apple store, then make a call on it and while I am the call walk into the glass windows and then sue Apple claiming because of the defective antenna I was having trouble receiving the call and while distracted I walked into the glass window because I did not see it. That way I can sue for "One meellion dollars"

Can you hear me now?

Is Apple still giving out bumpers as that page says? I called AppleCare to see and I have an iPhone 4 with AppleCare that never got a bumper under the free case program in 2010, and the guy said that Apple is not giving out any bumpers.

"I got a free bumper, but now I can't collect my $15?!"

"My iPhone 4 STILL doesn't work right."

"Apple owes me much more than $15."

"Can I exchange the bumper for $15?"

"Can I get the bumper and return it for $29?"

"All this lost productivity, and this is all we get?!"

I hope I hit everything. We can all stop whining now.

Completely ridiculous. This is a non-issue because you have to take the phone's case off to make it happen, so in normal use, it never will. What a bunch of slimy lawyers.

If that were true, there would not have been a class action lawsuit. Some 25 million people were not satisfied with a "colorful piece of plastic and rubber".

Uh, no. Most of the members of the class in the lawsuit do not even know there was a lawsuit. Nobody polled them and asked them if they were dissatisfied with the iPhone 4. You had to go out of your way to explicitly opt-out of the class if you didn't want to be included.

HA!:D I was thinking the same exact thing!
