Most DJ's use Ableton and it's also on Windows. So there is no reason to go for a Mac. A Mac is trendy when you're on stage I suppose :p

that's not true. the one reason why professional djs use mac laptops is latency. the macbook pro series has consistently been able to run pro audio and dj apps with a low latency, something that is not a given on other laptops with other operating systems.

This is my first post, and I registered to reply to this particular subject, since I have experience in the area.

I have been DJing since 93, and I have gone through various laptops. In doing so, I have interacted with many DJs. Most clubs have Serato installed, and the most common setups I've seen use either Serato or Traktor. For both of these programs, the Mac is the way to go.

Here is why. Laptops running Windows run fine, as long as you know how to tweak and maintain it. A lot of DJs really don't know much about Windows, and when they start using the laptop for everything else, they complain that the DJ software glitches or runs slow. I had a Dell, and it served its purpose. I never used it for anything else and it worked fine. But I was constantly running various tweaks on it. I switched to a Mac about 4 years ago, installed Serato without tweaking anything, and it ran like a dream. I also used the Macbook for other things (Ableton, ProTools, CS4) and performance was never affected.

I recently picked up a 15" MBP i7 with the antiglare display because Serato is now going to integrate with Ableton, so essentially both programs will have to run at the same time, so I needed a little more power under the hood. As for my trusty 2006 White Macbook, it still runs like it did the first day I got it.

BTW, I suggest that your roommate pick up a 500GB 7200rpm drive and upgrade it himself. It's not that hard to do. Having an external drive may seen convenient, but in a club when you are switching out with another DJ, having an external drive becomes a huge hassle. My MBP came with a 500GB 5400RPM, but I replaced it with the new Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid. I put the original drive in an enclosure and use it as backup (with all my Serato crates and music) in case the Mac decides not to work.

Bottom line....get the Mac, it'll mean less headaches later.:D

My co worker is a dj, and he uses a 17"mbp with anti glare screen. He had a windows unit before, which he says worked, but that the mbp and osx is like the difference between numark mid grade tables and his 1k a piece technic's, both get the job done, but one is clearly better... I actually don't know why he still had a day job since he makes more dj' ing

QUOTED FOR TRUTH!!!!

ive been a dj for 10 years.....been through vinyl, cds, and then ibm and hp laptop before getting my MBP 15' 2.53 last week...

holy ***** its night and day....like jorel said the windows machines i had to tweak the hell out of...dont have to tweak anything with the MBP

i plan on finally brining Ableton into my live shows because of the mac...it runs soooo smoooth...i never felt confident enough on windows for ableton to be stable enough for live performance...serato would run fine on window but i would get screen freezes all time, music only kept playing because of the high buffer

the numark and technics analogy is best way to put it

@djjorel
Awesome 1st post ;) TY for taking the time to register and give info :)

@djcyph
Ty also for the info :) My room mate decided to get the 15 2.4 with Hi Res / AG screen. He went by the apple store and looked today and said he liked the AG.

I have yet to see any DJs actually use those programs. Whenever I see a DJ using a laptop, a mixer, and decks, they is running either Traktor or Serato Scratch Live. As far as live composition and live remixing, it is usually Ableton with 1 or more midi controllers...

I'm not saying that the above are not being used, I'm just saying that I haven't seen it...and I have been around and seen a lot of DJs....

^ D-jay 3 is the only one i had heard of previously before reading the descriptions on their websites.

All four of those seem marketed towards average consumers rather than people trying to take DJ-ing seriously.

Most club DeeJays don't even use laptops.

Depends on the DJ I suppose.

The one who did the Best Buy launch had a PC - HP DV9000 I believe (horrible machine). My coworker who DJ's every so often has an HP Verve that I sold him months ago, he says for the most part it's been totally reliable to run his sets off of. He doesn't use any optical media whatsoever. He just bought a MacBook Pro after seeing mine, but he's going to stick with the Verve mostly. I'm going to point him to some of the DJ apps pointed out here though in case he changes his mind. Battery life is his only real challenge, but since he stays plugged up it's not a bother.
