That's not really how it works. Apple does not pay the same price that you or I do on Amazon. Further, 10 years ago, if you didn't like Apple's pricing, you'd get the base configuration (which for the time could store a decent amount) and upgrade the storage or memory yourself. They've soldered it on now. In fact, if the logic board dies, your $1400 2TB storage device is no better than a paperweight.

Apple has always charged more than other manufacturers. It's just that they charged 20-30% more, not 50-100% more as they do today. And they didn't lock the system down to prevent you from choosing your own components.

I don’t think anyone was saying that Apple pay the same price as an OEM drive on Amazon. Certainly not the post you replied to. You claim that Apple are charging 50-100% more at $1400 for 2Tb SSDs at 3.2Gb/s. Go ahead and prove it. Show us a 2Tb 3.5Gb upgrade from any OEM that costs 50-100% less.

I think the problem is that Apple use a proprietary system, and they solder it on. It's been the case for a while though, even when they were replaceable it wasn't exactly an easy task to find a replacement (Retina days).

There's also I believe a lot of people who want cheaper storage options, and (I hope) would be willing to sacrifice the speed of the storage for a cheaper option. However Apple don't do this, they are supposed to be pro machines so offering the best possible options.

I don't know, I find them quite reasonable price and value. I wouldn't spend a fortune on a 4TB storage option as it's not something I need, I only need 512GB but would like 1TB, I'm happy to just organize my folders correctly to not worry about it so much. I also use mine to earn money, so it's not that much of a problem - I wouldn't touch one otherwise, unless I was rich or a clueless fanboy who just liked Apple for the sake of it.

Yup, just helped a buddy remove the 1tb ssd from his 2013 MacBook Pro, buy a cheap used Apple 128gb ssd and then sell the 1tb ssd separately and the MacBook Pro. He came out several hundred dollars ahead vs selling the 2013 MacBook with the 1tb ssd in it. I would never even consider the 4tb model with it being soldered as that’s a lot of cash to throw away if/when the 2018 logic board fails, that’s $3400 in the trash!

I'd find that argument easier to swallow if
1) They didn't use consistently subpar GPUs.
2) They didn't solder in everything in sight, so that when newer, better components are available, you can upgrade.
3) They offered competent performance on the 'non pro' systems.

You'd have a point if they we could be sure they were using a single 2TB SSD and not two even cheaper 1TB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. I know for certain that other computer makers are doing that. That would be easy to verify if it wasn't soldered on. 3.2Gb/s isn't a big deal when you are striping two smaller SSDs.

How would it being soldered on prevent you from telling?

As for the RAID 0 theory. We get it, you don’t like the price, but inventing theories and challenging people with them isn’t a valuable use of either of our time.

Ok I think no one would disagree with this, but the answer is always don’t buy Apple.
