I had my logic board replaced due to a non-working SD card reader. Looks like I may have to redo the paste again (blah).

Right now normal use integrated graphics I'm at 50C CPU and 45C GPU battery powered.

As for temps:
Before:
Idle: 44-48C
Browsing: 50-56
Load: 65-73

Now:
Idle: 36C
Browsing: 38-41
Load: (haven't really run full load yet) but so far peaks at 62

These temps are reported using SMCfancontrol with fans running at 2000 for idle, 2000 for browsing, and 3500 min for load.

this is what i'm talking about. i see people having huge difference as you report, but i was just not lucky and i don't believe i'm unrealistic. with AS5, as the latest attempt, i still don't get much better results and idle temps are high.

around 47C CPU running on integrated GPU with no display, only finder running. i've 2.3GHz 15". damn !

room temp at 25C

Well a 2.3 is gonna run hotter than my 2.0 thats just science.

I thought that given they have the same TDP*, they would emit the same amount of heat at all loads and thus have the same temperatures. One would think the 2.3 GHz would run hotter than the 2.0 GHz, except that the former has been binned higher (at a given frequency, stable with a lower voltage) so it's running equally as cool.

* The Core i7 2630QM (2.0 GHz), 2720QM (2.2 GHz) and 2820QM (2.3 GHz) all have a 45W TDP.

Did you get a SATA3 optical port in your new logic board?

On my 2.3, running Safari with multiple tabs, Mail, Adium, and iTunes. Been on since 8AM.

So idle in the ~30C is definitely possible.

that confirms it, what the hell is wrong with mine ? makes no sense to running 10C hotter with 100% idle (finder only).

Anyone have idle temps running a 27" Apple Cinema Display? My 2011 15" MBP stays around 50-60C idling around 3-4% CPU and I'm wondering if it's because I'm running the external display (since the CPU and GPU are linked) and that temp is to be expected or it's somewhat out of the "norm".

I feel comfortable doing it, I just want to know what I should reasonably expect.

Those are "normal" temperatures: whenever an external display is connected, the discrete GPU takes over. This GPU runs very hot, around 50°C idle. Since the CPU and the discrete GPU are in contact with the same heatsink, the CPU warms up to the idle temperature of the dGPU, at least, so about 50-60°C idle.

Hmm... I should revise those temps as it's actually more like 60-70C. 50-60C is right after a cold boot or sleep.

I'm currently sitting between 51-54C (fans at 1981 RPM). I just shut down a VMWare session (was at 63-68C). Now have iTunes, Adium, Skype, Quicktime, Mail, Dashboard & Safari running with the laptop in clamshell mode...connected to a 27" ACD. Computer has been on for over 3hrs.

Wow, what a difference new thermal paste makes. At full load, my laptop now does 85-86C @ 4700RPM after applying some MX-4 compared to a stock 90C at @6000RPM. Definitely a solid improvement.

There was so much excess thermal paste on there, it was embarrassing.

All of the unrealistic expectations and disinformation in this post is killing me. Just lol. The majority of your computers are fine as is.

There may be misinformation and false assumptions but I doubt there's disinformation. What's for sure is the results, and there are a lot of them. They speak for themselves.

I can understand that some may try to convince themselves that stock temperatures + fan noise are normal (thermal paste re-application being such a daunting task), but they're obviously not given the abundance of success reported in this thread.

Don't get me wrong, I applied some. But I know what I'm doing and I don't have unrealistic expectations. I'm just lolling at all the newbs who slipped into this post and have no clue what they're tinkering with on the inside of their Mac. If they hadn't read this post, they'd be completely content with their machines. I find that MacRumors raises a lot of unnecessary "is my Mac overheating" and other worrywart posts when there is absolutely nothing wrong. Sure, you can get lower temps, but the computer won't fry operating 5 - 15 degrees higher.

Hi aznguyen316,

I just follow ur video guide on youtube to redo the thermal paste and I noticed there is another cable that are attached at the bottom of the logic board near the sdcard and usb port and I think that's the cable for the sdcard slot. It took me a while to attach that cable back...

Edit:
I found a picture of the cable that I'm talk about from this thread. The square in the picture is the cable that I'm talked about and the circle in the picture is the thing that stick on the case. The white stuff looks like a glue and I thought it is soldered on the case. If I knew it's glued on the case, it will save me a lot of time to attach that cable back...

Stephen

i feel like an idiot. i take laptops apart all the time, tried to apply the past 5 times and i cannot get a decent result.

there is time, as now, when the system is idle (besides safari, taping this thing) connected to external monitor and this is the temps and i get. up for all day.

ps: can you guys who got such a good results comment on spreading vs. grain of rice spread with the heat sink ? what did you do ?

also, what about cure times ? did you get better temps immediately ? AS5 claims 200h cure time, that's what's there now, about 100h since application, no real difference ;-(

I know this isn't what you want to hear but i personally wouldn't sweat it. Your temps are fine and you've already re-applied the paste (i haven't done that) so your machine won't cook itself as much and your temps will drop overall in the future. Plus i don't have external drives connected on my machine.

When you're connected to an external monitor, your discrete GPU is active. What are your temps when not connected to an external display running the integrated?
