Simply because the whole OS is not DPI independent, I don't want to be squinting at small text, menu bars, buttons, ect.
The 17in MBP just has too high of a DPI IMO for what I want to do. I suppose I need more face time to adjust but I came from a 1440x900 17in iMac.

One of these days, OS X will be resolution independent just like Windows is, and then the higher resolution the better! I can't wait for that day!

i voted for the high ress glossy screen. I don't get why everybody is upset about glossy screens? just don't point your desk lamp right into the screen and you will notice the picture is muchh more vivid and not dampend as with a matte screen

Well what you're forgetting is that we're talking about a laptop here, you can't always adjust your surrounding light. What if the only seat in the coffee shop is directly below a light? Or outside? Or if you're on an aeroplane? Very annoying.

It's that I would point a lamp on my screen, it's that I see the surroundings reflecting in the screen, including my own ugly face, that bothers me.
BTW: I voted 1650x1050 matte.

I would strongly consider selling my unibody MacBook if Apple released one of two things- a 15" MBP with 1680x1050 matte screen, or a 13" MBP with 1440x900 matte screen... I still much prefer the 13" form factor as far as notebooks are concerned, but I would settle for a 15" MBP if it meant a significant boost in the screen resolution (though it'd be a squeeze fitting it into my current backpack!).

Seems like the large majority prefers 1680*1050. Why isn't Apple offering it?

My guess is that it's a simple supply problem. It may well be that none of Apple's suppliers is now making LED displays at this resolution that are decent enough quality.

The same may be true for display size. Given the size of the 15.4"'s bezel, they could easily fit a 15.6" or 15.8" in there to be closer to the 17" bezel size. But this is not a commonly built display size.

To the admins

Oh hey admins, could one of you be so kind to change the 3rd and 4th option of this thread to 1680x1050? I clarified early in the thread that this was what I wanted to have, so this is what everybody voted for. Thanks in advance!

To everybody else, can you remind me of Steve Jobs address at Apple? I want to send this thread there. Not that I assume it will matter, but I have hope it will make a tiny difference...

it will make no difference. This poll has <150 voters. That is probably equivalent to less than 1% of apples laptop market. Plus, people who read forums and blogs typically are more technologically advanced and want different things in their tech products than 98% of other users. Your typical person buying an apple for home or college doesn't really care about having a higher res screen, nor do they care about matte displays. The majority of people who buy computers actually probably prefer the gloss display because it makes the colors pop more and it "looks cooler" to them.
