If it's correct, and it appears that it may be, it would drive me nuts, since I gambled on the 2.53 supporting it in the future. While I realize it was never advertised, etc. it still would be pretty frustrating.

The 2.53 GHz memory options list 4 GB only: http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME_15_2_53_MBP

(what we all know to be the partial truth - in ref. to the fact that it can take 6 GB)

The 2.66 GHz memory options list 8 GB:
http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME_15_2_66_MBP

(what I have seen no tests on yet and is either a typo or a huge find)

This page doesn't even list the 2.53 GHz model link:
http://store.apple.com/us/memoryfamily/ME_MBP

(evidence that Apple may not be maintaining these pages particularly well)

i talked to the Geniuses at the apple store about it today and they said while they expect that the 15" will support it down the road that there is no way that the site is correct. and that no 15" supports it right now.

The only difference between the 2.53Ghz 15" and the 2.66Ghz 15" MAcbook Pro is the processor type, isn't it?
They didn't change the logicboard?

The Processor itself doesn't limit the maximum ram useable does it?

So why would there be a difference between the two?

The 15" models do not support 8GB of ram, that's all models up to the current Unibody designs. All CPU speeds. The most you can support unofficially is 6GB, 4+2, whilst losing dual channel support. Which isn't that big of a deal anyway over the increase in capacity.

It looks like pretty much a mistake listing on the website.

You can see others experiences of trying to put more than 6GB in the 15" MBP's in the thread I already posted, and how it doesn't work.

Thread link:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/573906/

And from the very first post:
Unibody MacBooks can use 6GB
Unibody MacBook Pro 15" can use 6GB
Unibody MacBook Pro 17" can use 8GB

I just had a chat with apple about 8GB of ram in the 15in UniBody Macbook Pro and they said it would work with no problem.

I'm not willing to be the guinea pig and drop 1200 bucks to try it out, but I can't see apple putting it there if it didn't work. unless 10.5.7 will fix it so it does work.

ppl HAVE tried and it doesnt work!!

I thought DDR3 is Tri-Channel? So you'll need 3 modules to get the best performance? Because I've seen core i7 kits come with memory modules in sets of 3s. like this

If that's true, and please correct me if it's false, than (2x2GB) and (2GB+4GB) would be the same speed, because neither option is tri-channel enabled...
It depends on the memory controller I think. The one for Core i7 is 3-channel, Core and Core 2 are 2-channel.

I understand that, but apple is saying it does work.

i talked to some apple ppl and they said that it will never work. then they said that its going to work in the future. i talked to another apple employee yesterday that thought that they could only run 2GB. and then another guy came over and said that he was pretty sure that you could put 16GB in so i dont care what apple says. the members in that thread tested it many times many different ways and it didnt work. so unless something is going to change it doesnt work regardless of what apple says

However, no one in that thread, not a single one, has tested 8GB in a 2.66 or 2.93.

According to the Apple Store, it works. If it was a mistake, it would have been taken down, no? And no one has done anything to disprove it yet.

I don't care either way, as I have no need for more than 4GB of RAM. I don't see why people are refusing to believe that it's a possibility, though.

i fully believe that it will happen. i want it to be true. i wish that i could blow $1200 to test this out and let you all know. can anyone? calling all rich ppl let us know if this works.;)

I find it odd that the 2.4 GHz model can't do 8 GB of ram. The only thing different between it and the 2.66 GHz model is the CPU Clock speed and the GPU has 512 Mb of ram.

The chip set is exactly the same. The only thing I can think of is apple is using a new firmware on the 2.66 that enables 8 GB.

GRRRR okay here is the scoop

All 15" UBMBP's will be able to use 8GB of ram with the release of snow leopard.... You just need to wait a couple more months and you can do it

im curious how you came to that conclusion. im not saying i dont believe you or challenging you i just want to know for sure. thanks

This is what many of us *believe* as well but as far as I know no one has proffered anything resembling proof.

Also the ambiguity here is that to my knowledge, there are no reports of the recent refresh (2.66 and 2.93 GHz) 15" MBPs being tested with more memory. The earlier tests were done on 2.53 and/or 2.4 GHz machines.

In other news, the 1x4 GB DIMM prices actually went UP for the first time in over 3 months, at OWC. It was holding steady at $349 for several weeks and is now $369.

Apple's Geniuses are the last people to ask about this. I noticed I usually know way more than them.

I think its not a firmware limitation rather a logic board limitation.

Isnt it odd how the 17" unibody mbp has both 2.66GHz and 2.93GHz similar to the bumped up specs on the 15" and how they both can support 8GB of RAM.

Boy am I glad I sold my 2.53GHz mbp before this was apparent. :)

If Snow Leopard allowed the 2.53GHz mbp to utilize 8GB of RAM, then that means the 2.4/2.5/2.6GHz of last years mb/mbp would be able to utilize 8GB of RAM with Snow Leopard.

Its not a firmware limitation rather a hardware in the logic boards thats able to utilize 8GB of RAM.

I'm guessing the 2.66GHz and the 2.93GHz uses a totally new logic board or rather tweaked hardware wise.

I just saw this thread.

I can confirm that 8GB does work fine on a 2.93 15" with either Leopard or the SL dev release.

I think everyone who is saying it does not work on the 15s has been testing that on the 2.53s and 2.8s.
